On March 26, Charles Esten hosts the 10th annual T.J. Martell Foundation Nashville Honors Gala at the Omni Hotel to raise money for cancer research and treatment. Created by music industry executive Tony Martell to honor his late son, the Foundation holds the gala to honor community leaders, while highlighting Nashville’s music industry. This year, there will be performances by Lauren Alaina, Natalie Grant, and Jeff Foxworthy. The Foundation has generated more than $280 million, and the gala has accumulated more than $3 million since 2009. Nashville’s annual Ballet Ball, co-chaired by Adrienne McRae and Suzanne Smothers, will dazzle with black-tie glamour on March 3 at Schermerhorn Symphony Center. A project of remembrance, Violins of Hope brings Nashville a collection of refurbished violins that were played by Jews during The Holocaust. Inspiring James Grymes’ novel, Violins of Hope: Violins of the Holocaust—Instruments of Hope and Liberation in Mankind’s Darkest Hour, and a documentary, the project gives a voice to those who had theirs taken away from them. “From the beginning, we saw the project as music, violins, and incredible stories. We wanted the Violins of Hope project to be much more—a launching pad for city discussion of The Holocaust, civil rights, censorship, and interfaith dialogue,” Nashville Symphony COO Steven Brosvik says. What Haviland Whiting remembers most about the moment she heard her name announced as the 2018 Nashville youth poet laureate was hearing her father in the audience cheering. “I heard my dad in the back yelling, the very back of the huge Vanderbilt auditorium.
