As art teaches again and again, the human experience is a collective one—and, in tumultuous times, can help start necessary dialogues. This month, the Nashville Ballet brings a difficult conversation to the forefront through its performance Light / The Holocaust and Humanity Project. This full-length ballet tells the real-life story of Holocaust survivor Naomi Warren through a series of five sections, set to contemporary music. “The work is deliberately abstract so it’s not a retelling of the Holocaust, but rather a piece that we can relate to all forms of injustice,” Nashville Ballet’s artistic director Paul Vasterling says. The smoky cousin to tequila is now being made by artisanal producers, meaning there’s an exciting new world (one without worms) of mezcals to explore. One of Nashville’s fiercest advocates for the agave-based spirit is Clay Franklin, the bar manager at Butchertown Hall. Specializing in smoked meats, Butchertown puts an emphasis on Texas Hill Country cuisine, which was born of a melding of cultures from Spanish, German, and Czech immigrants to that region—so, the Germantown restaurant is a natural spot to explore the realm of mezcal. “Our culinary emphasis and our setting calls for unique spirits,” Franklin explains. “I’ve been introducing people to mezcal for three years.” The first thing that…

The Nashville Wine Auction’s annual Pairings weekend, February 22 through 24, will offer several events, including private vintner dinners, a “Wined Up!” event, and the Pairings dinner and wine auction, which wraps up the weekend. NWA CEO Holly Whaley says the event has tripled in size since its inception. “It started out with just one night. Two years since debuting their hair color line, good-DYEyoung, Paramore front-woman Hayley Williams and her longtime hairstylist Brian O’Connor are expanding their brand—and their mission—in Nashville. The pair launched good-DYEyoung, a semi-permanent hair dye, back in 2016. The nine base shades are bold and vibrant (and, when combined with a fader, completely customizable). The conditioning formula, scented with essential oils, like sweet orange and bergamot, is vegan and cruelty-free, too. In 2014, Liz Veyhl founded Small World Yoga (SWY), a nonprofit that makes yoga available to diverse communities that don’t otherwise have access. The need was clearly there: In 2017 alone the organization doubled in size, from serving 30 partner locations to 57. Now, more than 1,300 people take advantage of the free asanas offered in libraries, schools, shelters, and elsewhere every month. This spring, the organization takes another big leap forward, opening what will be Nashville’s first nonprofit yoga studio.
