If you’ve eaten at a Nashville restaurant, you’ve likely tasted the work of Creation Gardens. The food distributor—basically a go-between that offers thousands of different products, from produce to grass-fed and grain-finished beef, directly to restaurantsisn’t usually named on the menu or written on a chalkboard, but they work behind the scenes with hundreds of area restaurants like Urban Grub and Pinewood Social. Now, through a new division called Butchery Fresh, they’re bringing some of those same ingredients to home cooks. In 2015, the Nashville-based supplier acquired a family-owned, USDA-inspected butcher facility in Louisville, Kentucky, taking the produce company in a whole new direction. The Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s annual gala benefits their educational outreach programs. “Through TPAC Education’s five programs, students are given access to world-class performances, along with teaching and learning resources that inspire creative connections to classroom curricula,” Charles Stewart, TPAC’s vice president for institutional advancement, says. “Adult audiences, too, can enjoy special events, including discussions with artists and experts to enhance the performance experience.” TPAC’s Education programs include ArtSmart, Disney Musicals in Schools, Humanities Outreach in Tennessee, TPAC Inside Out, and Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts. These programs provide access to the arts through features like subsidized tickets, teacher curriculums, and seminars. The TPAC Gala usually raises about $300,000 for education and outreach. The seventh annual Music and Masterpieces, benefitting the Thisbe & Noah Scott Foundation for Pediatric Neuromuscular Diseases, will feature local musicians and regional artists to promote research and awareness for children with neuromuscular illnesses on August 26. Musicians include singer-songwriter Chris Thompson, and artist Cecily Hill Lowe from Birmingham, Alabama, will be featured amongst the 90-plus artists displayed. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the art auction go back to the foundation. The Thisbe & Noah Scott Foundation was born after Laurian and John Scott lost two children to incredibly rare neuromuscular diseases within a year of each other. Now, the foundation helps others in similar situations. Entrepreneur and businesswoman Debe Dohrer launched her business Custom Rags, a personalized clothier for men and women, in 2000. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native had ventured to Nashville a few years earlier with her then boyfriend, who was a musician who played with Lyle Lovett. Dohrer soaked up everything the city had to offer. “I was like a sponge. Because I came here from Scottsdale, I needed culture—something cool,” she says. Dohrer worked at clothing store Coco, and later J. Michaels Clothiers, before setting off on her own. Facial hair has returned as a mainstay in men’s fashion, and beards are leading the charge. For James Mason and Jason Kloess, the bearded twosome behind The Roosevelts, facial hair is as much a part of the band’s identity as its unique Southern sound.
