The 7th annual Centennial Park Conservancy Gala’s theme, Then & Now, combines the park’s exciting world’s fair history with the anticipation of present-day park revitalization projects. Recognizing the full impact the 1897 Exposition had on Nashville, Conservancy president Sylvia Rapoport says the organization strives to “bring that wonderment to [the] Gala,” which is set for November 4. The evening promises to feature surprises and performances, while shining a light on the park’s 120-year history. “The Conservancy is committed to strengthening, enhancing, and restoring these two Nashville crown jewels for the next century and beyond,” Rapoport says. For the first time, the O’More Show House is being held in Nashville instead of Franklin. Put on by the O’More College of Design, this year’s house is located in Você, on land owned by late country music star Eddy Arnold. Following Arnold’s instruction, everything built on the property is sustainable. The 4,015-square-foot Show House features 17 rooms, a mixture of traditional and innovative designs, with each room conceptualized by a different designer, many of whom are O’More alumni. Architect Carson Looney and builder Brady Fry, of Fry Classic Construction, worked with lead designer Kimberly Kelly to bring the home to life. Even though chef Jessica Benefield is a lifelong Nashvillian, who knows the city’s food scene back to front, it wasn’t until late 2016 when she discovered an entire community of refugee farmers, most of whom had arrived here from Burma or Bhutan almost a decade ago. “As soon as we heard about what they were growing, we said, ‘We want to work with them,’” she says. The farmers, now members of Growing Together, which is part of The Nashville Food Project, each run their own micro-enterprise, selling leafy greens, okra, pumpkins, and other produce to restaurants and at farmers’ markets around town. This month, the biannual fundraising art show, Love the Lake, Love the Land, will be on display at the Radnor Lake Walter Criley Visitor Center, with a portion of proceeds from the works sold benefitting Friends of Radnor Lake. The art show will feature works created by plein air artists, as well as an added repertoire of wildlife paintings. “Last event, we had some beautiful paintings of fawns and turtles [that] people just bought and loved,” director of operations for Friends of Radnor Lake Gretchen Pritchett says. “For them, it’s the heart and soul of Radnor Lake. The Nashville Fashion Alliance Honors will be held on November 16 at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works. The inaugural show’s theme is Art and Commerce: Tradition and Transformation, which will recognize the city’s history with the arts and the importance of fashion in the city’s economy. Money raised from the Honors will go toward programs and initiatives for the NFA. Chef Maneet Chauhan has been busy creating a mini dining empire on 12th Avenue North. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder is an impressive trio, beginning with Chauhan Ale and Masala House, followed by Tansuo Contemporary Chinese, and, now, there’s The Mockingbird. “They are like your children,” she muses, “each with a distinctive personality, yet you love all the same.” The most recent may be the most distinctive: The Mockingbird is a modern, global diner.
