Q I can’t decide between Nikon’s 70-200mm f/2.8 and f/4 zoom lenses. I’d like to stick to an own-brand Nikon lens but does the pricier f/2.8 give better image quality? 1 USE A TRIPOD Chris says… Focus stacking is essentially taking several identical shots, moving the focus point slightly between them, and it’s therefore vital that every shot is perfectly aligned. Set up your camera on a tripod so that it’s rock steady and be careful not to nudge it – or the zoom ring – between shots. 2 MANUAL FOCUS Chris says… Start by manually focusing on the foreground and work your way back (take a photo each time you alter your point of focus). My stories mainly focus on humanitarian crises or war, subjects that can often be seen as challenging and upsetting. With this project I wanted to look at the positives that can still be found within negative situations. The refugee crisis has been widely publicized in recent years, so I was keen to look at things in a different way, focusing on ‘refugee love stories’ that provide strength and hope. Love is one of the most important elements of human life. It provides us with positivity and hope when we are going through our darkest times, like many of these refugees are. £550/$660 Irix burst onto the lens market recently with 11mm and 15mm ultra-wide full-frame lenses, and both handled and performed very well in our testing. Having succeeded in the wide-angle sector, Irix is now closing in on the macro market, and its first attempt is the 150mm f/2.8 Dragonfly. As macro lenses go, 150mm is a relatively long focal length, but it’s ideal if you want to shoot easily-spooked live subjects like bugs or, indeed, dragonflies. The lens’s 1:1 magnificent magnification ratio means that your subject is reproduced at the same size on the image sensor as it would be in reality. Star Letter Content with the content I have been meaning to write you since receiving the redesigned issues of N-Photo. I have found the changes to be a big improvement in the look and content of the magazine. Previous to the change, I was finding some of the content to be of little interest to me. For a home studio setup, or if you’re shooting indoors on location, there’s no beating the power and versatility of a conventional mains-powered flash kit. Prime options include the likes of the Elinchrom D-Lite and Interfit Honey Badger twin-head kits, which are fairly compact and easy to carry, yet quick to set up. The only real problem is if you want the versatility of being able to shoot outdoors, using a flash head to supplement natural daylight.
