Cap Ferret has a long-held association with getting away from it all. “The 44 Hectares,” as it is fondly known to locals, is a wide spit of sand separating the Atlantic Ocean from the calm waters of Arcachon Bay. Splendidly isolated, it is only accessible - in and out - by one main road or by a ferry from the more touristy town of Arcachon. A quiet cul de sac of barefoot, laid-back casualness, life here is best enjoyed slowly.
