The art world has long considered Wayne Thiebaud (1920 - 2021) one of America’s premier food artists. Thiebaud (pronounced T-bow) lived in Sacramento, California, and painted ordinary items found at diners and cafeterias. His subjects included pieces of pie, layer cakes, lollipops, and ice cream cones, as well as American lunch and dinner foods. He also brought Western landscapes and everyday people to life. His style was playful, colorful, and emotional. He wasn’t afraid to use bright colors, dark outlines, and thick brushstrokes, but he also showed restraint and respect for his subjects.
