The young dolphin gives a quick flip of its head, and as if by magic, a silver ring appears in front of it. The donut-shaped bubble is two feet (about a half a meter) across and doesn’t immediately rise to the surface. The dolphin pushes the shiny donut, and after a few moments, creates another. Sound like fun? Definitely! But is the dolphin just playing, or is something more going on?
Burst My Bubble
The creation of these rings, accordin to some scientists, is play. Diana Reiss, a professor of psychology at Hunter College, New York, says, “We can never be sure, but I’m pretty convinced what they are doing with the bubbles is a conscious, playful act. It seems like it’s fun for them.”
Both wild and captive dolphins…
