On August 9, 1944, the British Columbia regiment was tasked with taking up position near the town of Falaise, in the famed “Falaise pocket” located near the Laizon and Laize valleys. The armored vehicles of the 28th Infantry Division advanced with difficulty through the mist that engulfed route N158, the Caen-Falaise road, in search of German units. American 18-cylinder P-47 Thunderbolts and British V-12 Spitfires roared overhead. The Battle of Normandy was raging on. Seventy-five years later, in August 2019 (which is when I took my trip), route N158 and its surroundings were much more peaceful. USEFUL TOOL I just finished reading Costa’s piece on his beloved Atlas Lathe (“Mojo Garage,” May 2022). I also have a metal lathe in my shop. It is a Hercus 9A, which is an Australian-built clone of a South Bend nine-inch lathe. My shop is also graced with a Rong Fu milling/drilling machine. It says King Canada on it but it is made by RongFu in China. It is an awesome drill press and an okay milling machine. I have made a great many pullers and pushers, aligners and other jigs and fixtures for doing the maintenance on various motorcycles over the years. As found, the 250 cc British motorcycle was in original condition and it represented a unique challenge that intrigued Calgary’s Roger Brown. Seemingly in a perpetual state of motion, restorer Brown has brought a remarkable number of interesting old machines back from the brink, and one of those was a 1947 Triumph 3T. This 350 cc Triumph figures into how the Raleigh was obtained. Here are a couple of pics from our trip to Italy in 1963. The one of my wife Babs and myself was taken as we left our campsite on the Adriatic Coast at a place called Cattolica. The one of me with the 1957 Norton 600 Dominator was in France. We had just stopped at a roadside café and were sitting having coffee when another Norton Dominator stopped across the road. The two young guys jumped off and began looking at the bike and revving it up. I went over and asked them what the problem was. My father and grandfather both worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, so my childhood was pretty much spent around old railway sidings, and the smell of creosote ties lingers strong in my memories. I even took a run at working for the CPR decades ago, loading up my 1981 Honda CM400T to attend brakeman training in Revelstoke, B.C. Motorcycling stuck, but being a brakeman was short-lived. I did, however, retain a fascination with the romanticism of the bygone era of rail travel, when steeped-walled valleys echoed the sound of bellowing steam engines. Heat, weather, traffic and construction are just a few things to consider when planning a motorcycle trip In summer 2021, the residents of Western Canada experienced the “heat dome,” a cone of extreme hot weather that blanketed most of B.C., Alberta, and parts of Saskatchewan over a few weeks in July. My husband and I didn’t passively suffer through the heat by staying indoors and hydrating; we took a weeklong motorcycle riding trip through some of the hottest parts of the B.C. Interior and the Alberta Rockies. We had fun and enjoyed every moment.
