I just bought a 2022 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE. Like all other major motorcycle manufacturers, Triumph offers a time-limited warranty that requires certain maintenance be performed on the bike. I perform all my own maintenance, but all manufacturers have different requirements when it comes to who performs said maintenance, and how that affects the bike’s warranty. The warranty, which can extend from one to three years on street bikes depending on the manufacturer, covers any defects in materials or workmanship that might arise within that warranty period. So you might think that everything from axle to axle is covered, but it’s not. I never thought it would happen again. Probability would state that the odds were in my favour that I wouldn’t hit a deer by motorcycle more than once. Ride North Moto began in 2018, when three riders saw an opportunity to not only raise funds for a fellow rider and first responder in need, but to try something completely new by riding the ice roads. Since that initial ride, the organization has worked to raise funds for the Local HERO Foundation through the help of donations and partnerships. Each year the ride has grown with eager interest and support. Riding the ice roads in northern Alberta is no easy feat, but many of the riders work as first responders and carry the local knowledge required to tackle the roads safely. At press time, Triumph had teased about an upcoming new model that will also be built around the 1,160 cc triple. It’s a new Tiger 1200. Details have not yet been released, but what we’ve gleaned by looking at photos of the bike is that it is all-new, it’s shaft-driven (formerly chain), and it seems to have a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel. Sometimes you meet people that instantly alter the course of your life. They become what I call the “specials:” people that introduce you to something new, and with whom you can always be yourself no matter how much time goes by. I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that the mercurial growth of adventure bikes has come at the expense of the touring segment. While sales of Adventure Rs and Africa Twins have grown exponentially, the popularity of traditional touring bikes — everything from Honda’s iconic Gold Wing to the once-almost-as-ubiquitous ST1300 — have either languished or, in worst-case scenarios, completely vanished. Indeed, were it not for BMW’s equally-iconic R1250 RT — and the occasional sighting of a KTM Duke GT — sport-tourers would be all but dead. So much so that I think that the aforementioned RT’s most ardent competitor isn’t Yamaha’s long-in-the-tooth FJR1300 or Kawasaki’s outrageous Concours14, but BMW’s own R1250 GS.
