The motorcycle industry lost a valuable member back on Feb. 3, 2021: Dale Walksler, owner of Wheels Through Time Museum, passed away after a long battle with cancer. Dale began in the motorcycle industry by selling motorcycles at the age of 18 and then becoming one of the youngest dealers in Harley-Davidson history as the owner of a franchise in Mt. Vernon, Ill., at the age of 25. Apparently, he even accepted a bear cub as a deposit on a motorcycle once. The bear had full run of the shop until it outgrew the space and was relocated to a local animal shelter. Dale sold his dealership in 2000. Like me, you’ve survived the Covid-related lockdown periods and will soon be riding. With my motorcycle and snowmobile business shut down due to lockdowns, I had to find ways to keep sane and solvent. What I came up with was to fix up and sell one-third of our rider-training fleet. I guess one positive of Covid has been an incredible surge in demand for off-road vehicles, which means selling dirt bikes, ATVs and snowmobiles is now very easy. Preparing units for sale kept me busy until February, and once I sold enough of them to pay the bills, I began working on my own bikes. I discovered Ted’s Range Road Diner while taking my new-to-me 1977 BMW out for a “test” ride in 1997, which turned out to be a 600-km ride. Twenty-three years later, it’s still my No. 1 bike. The old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” applies to this excellent restaurant. The menu includes emu, alligator, bison, venison and freshly caught trout from Georgian Bay, and so much more. Recently, we received the last-ever print issue of Cycle World. We suspected the day was coming, but it didn’t make us any less sad to see another great motorcycle publication end its print career after being purchased by a publishing powerhouse. We all use the internet like it’s Frank’s RedHot sauce (I use that stuff on everything), but are we missing out on the quality of information that we once held so highly in return for convenience? As a child, I looked forward to each magazine that would come in the mail, enthralled with the content provided. As I wrote in the previous issue of Motorcycle Mojo, the recent acquisition of a 2018 Street Twin prompted me to search for a factory service manual, only to discover that Triumph offers neither a hard copy nor a digital manual for purchase. You can, however, access an online manual by purchasing blocks of time. Prices for this access can be staggering, ranging from US$7.50 for one hour to US$3,780 for one year – and that’s for access to a manual for a single model, not for Triumph’s entire range. Now, that last number is shocking, but it’s highly unlikely that anyone would need continuous access to a service manual for a full year to perform a repair, no matter how involved the procedure. This photo is of me as a three-year-old sitting on my dad’s Harley-Davidson. Dad served with the Saskatoon City Police Force and did motorcycle patrol for a time, although he said he was never very comfortable manoeuvring the big bike around in the city. Ask any good riding coach what the most common riding error they see at the track is, and they will say adding lean angle and throttle at the same time. What does this mean? This means that while you are still actively leaning or steering the bike over in a corner, you are simultaneously rolling on the gas. And this is a bad habit for a few reasons. First, let’s go over what good throttle control is and what it does for the bike. Throttle control is responsible for keeping your motorcycle stable by transferring weight from the smaller front tire onto the rear tire, which sets the suspension in the correct range and makes the bike more stable. Alan Cathcart brings us the most lust-worthy bikes from around the world Italy-based Bimota’s 2019 announcement that Kawasaki Heavy Industries had acquired a 49.9 per cent share in the born-again boutique manufacturer and the news that the supercharged Tesi H2 would be the first model created under the new partnership really hit the headlines. Production began in October 2020 at the rate of 20 bikes per month, thus reviving the Tesi name exactly 30 years after it first reached the marketplace with the Ducati-engined Tesi 1D. With apologies to Hamlet, I think age is what makes cowards of us all. We’ve all experienced enough random derailments to realize that diligence is not foolproof, that armour, no matter how assiduous, never offers enough protection and, most important – at least this is what’s getting me now that I’m 63 – injuries that youth shook off now take two or three months to mend. That’s why I’m much more safety-conscious these days. As I detailed in our previous issue, I don’t leave home without an airbag jacket and I literally cringe when I see some young rebel out riding in nothing more than a T-shirt and shorts.
