We start this issue off with KTM’s 1290 Super Adventure R, the Austria-based company’s adventure-touring powerhouse. If you feel a need to play in the forest on a bike that has a whopping 160 hp on tap and 103 ft-lb of stump-pulling torque, this may be the bike for you. Does it seem like your bike is getting taller each spring? Is it harder to get your leg over the seat when getting on and off? Are you sore and stiff the day after a long ride? When a friend of mine needed new brakes on his 2008 Harley-Davidson FLHX Street Glide with 160,000 km on the clock, he asked me what brand I’d recommend. From Mike and Karen Burke Harbour View Restaurant My wife and I were out on a day trip from Truro, N.S., heading toward Parrsboro. We found this place a block behind the Fundy Geological Museum caled Harbour View Restaurant, 476 Pier Rd in Parrsboro. Food was great. It’s a nice spot with a great friendly atmosphere. My wife had fish and chips; I got a western and fries. Jeremy Kroeker is a speaker, a YouTuber, and the award-winning author of “Motorcycle Therapy.” With his motorcycle, he has travelled to over 35 countries while managing to do at least one outrageously stupid thing in every one. He has evaded police in Egypt, tasted teargas in Israel, scrambled through minefields in Bosnia and Lebanon, and wrangled a venomous snake in Austria. One time he got a sliver in El Salvador. In 2017, mortgage broker Brian Korzenowski decided to move back to Victoria from Saskatchewan with Zeus and Apollo, his two Rottweiler dogs. His dogs were his life and they accompanied him everywhere, so he often wondered how he could incorporate his two best friends into his passion for motorcycle riding. That’s when he thought of a sidecar. “[Riding with the dogs] was kind of an iffy thing,” Brian explained. “The dogs were already seven years old. What if they didn’t like the sidecar? I am 63 years of age. Being something of a gym rat, I still box four days a week. Sufficiently caffeinated, I can still run up a ski hill – albeit the bunny run and at something of a slower pace than when, as Billy Joel once lamented, I wore a younger man’s clothes. Several weeks ago, I busted my wrist. Not while racing or track riding or flat tracking or mountain biking. Not crashing my dirt bike, or even doing anything remotely dangerous, fast or interesting. There’s no doubt that things have been a little different this year. As much as we enjoy our “alone time,” many of us still crave the sense of community that motorcycling gives us. Motorcyclists become a cohesive community in many ways, whether through events and rallies, group rides, online forums and weekly garage nights or rides with a few friends; even by a simple wave or nod to other motorcyclists passing by. Earlier this summer I was invited to go single-track riding in Squamish, B.C., with some new friends. I brought the only dirt bike I own, a 2006 Yamaha YZ125 that has seen some off-road trails and a few motocross tracks. While I tried to tell the group that I didn’t have much experience riding super-tight single-track, they forged ahead and in the first 10 minutes of the ride, I experienced some of the hardest terrain I’d encountered thus far. I was going through some family photographs and found a very interesting black-and-white large-format negative (which I colourized) for a photo taken pre-, during or post-Second World War. The rider is my uncle, Flight Sergeant Tommy Campbell. The photo probably was taken at the Sarcee Barracks, southwest of Calgary. Not long into the 1900s, motorcycles and their riders became an important part of Canada’s military. During the First and Second World Wars, motorcyclists served an important role as dispatch riders delivering messages to the front lines and doing reconnaissance work. Both were dangerous and demanding jobs, but motorcycles were manoeuvrable and were able to get to locations that may have been impassable to other vehicles.
