When you first lay eyes on this thing, you would bet your house on it being an entirely new model. With its raised foredeck and virtually plumb bow, its rectangular in-line hull windows, one-piece screen, uncluttered wraparound glass structure, panoramic sunroof and restrained, almost minimalist, style, it feels every bit the ‘next-generation’ sportscruiser. But actually, the first Delta 33 was introduced as an Open model in 2013, followed by the Coupé in 2017. Pershing has built some very cool boats over the 40 years it has been in business. From the outrageous jet-engined Pershing 70 of the 1990s to the lavish 140 superyacht of recent years, they have all been sleek, powerful, macho machines that positively demand attention, from the skipper as much as guests and onlookers. A bit like the Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the 1980s and ’90s, you needed to know what you were doing to get the best from them, particularly the sensitive early surface drive craft, which required careful trimming at speed and a cool head and steady hand when berthing. I was a working as a security guard at Canary Wharf, and as our children were starting to fly the nest, my wife and I were looking for a weekend hobby to keep us occupied. MERCURY VERADO 425 Having achieved widespread acclaim (and multiple awards) with its 5.7L V10 Verado outboards at 350 and 400hp, Mercury Marine has taken the step that many expected and introduced a more powerful version. Designed to take on its heavier, noisier, bigger 450hp rivals, the “all-new” Verado 425 is counting on its superior power-to-weight ratio to outperform them on the water. At 316kg, Mercury says its new 425hp model is 115kg lighter than “a 450hp competitor” – by which they presumably mean Yamaha’s big, torquey 5.6L V8 XTO. And while potential buyers should take any in-house figures with a pinch of salt, they sound compelling. After spending more than four months in the EU in 2019, we have spent no more than 75 days in any year since. First came the pandemic. Then health problems meant we needed a different boat. And then legislation dictated that our personal allowance for staying in the EU would be restricted to only 90 days in any 180. And that’s to say nothing of the fact that we have a dog. Launched in the UK at the 2017 Southampton Boat Show, we got our hands on the first one in the country just before it moved into the show on a September day tailor-made to demonstrate the attributes of this adaptable compact cruiser. First organised by North Mallorca’s Axopar dealer, Multimar Alcudia, in 2022 the idea proved so popular that it has now become a regular event. The latest one was held on 18 July, meeting at La Fortaleza near Pollença before cruising round Cap de Formentor to the rocky outcrop of Es Colomer followed by a raft up off Cala San Vicente and a tapas lunch. SALT PORTLAND I ’ve long been intrigued by the Isle of Portland, the southernmost point of the Jurassic Coast. Apart from the fact it’s not actually an island at all (it’s connected to the rest of Dorset by the southern end of Chesil Beach and a strip of blacktop known as the A354), I find it surprising there’s anything of it left above sea level given how much of its eponymous stone has been quarried to give us edifices such as the Palace of Westminster and the Tower of London. A safety line or tether is one of those items you often see in the chandlers but rarely on a motor boat. Sailors use them a lot, clipping on when it’s windy or at night when the consequences of falling overboard are that much more serious. However, a recent MOB training session with a life-sized dummy highlighted to me just how useful they can be on a motor boat as well. Not only was the dummy very heavy but it was also unable to assist in any way – just like an unconscious MOB. Unveiled at the Düsseldorf show in January 2014, the F380 was the very first model launched by the Hanse Group in Germany after it took on the Sealine brand. Based on the existing Sealine S380 sportscruiser hull although slightly longer, it translates into a very good looking and well balanced flybridge offering. INTERIOR Sealine stated at the time that the F380 had the largest interior volume in its class, an entirely believable claim because this is a seriously large sub 40ft boat.
