90% of body heat lost is through your head. The loudest noise in a Rolls Royce at 70mph is the ticking of the clock. If it depreciates, finance it, if it appreciates, buy it. The running costs of a boat are about 10% of the purchase cost. These, and many more, get trotted out by bar room experts over and over again. But what’s really strange is that no one seems to stop and think about them, they just regurgitate them to the next gullible fool, and on and on they go (incidentally, did you know that the word ‘gullible’ has been removed from the Oxford dictionary? Award-winning Finnish builder, XO, will be taking not one but two of its new flagship models to Boot Dusseldorf. Boat number 1, which we tested back in the summer, will come in ‘traditional’ XO grey with twin 600s on the transom; and boat Number 2 will feature a raft of subtle updates, alongside a Champagne-coloured wrap, lots of high-spec gadgets and triple Mercury 400hp V10s. While that will enable XO to demonstrate what can be done with this platform, the basic underpinnings of the new model speak for themselves. This latest next-generation hardtop cruiser from Aquador is certain to be one of the most keenly anticipated world debuts at the show, but we’ve already managed a sneak peek, thanks to a December trip to Poland, where the new boats are being built. As expected, it is based squarely on the same principles that made the smaller 250 and 300 so effective. Just as before, raised hull sides, narrow side decks and a generous beam-forward hull ramp up the volume to such a degree that both the main deck day spaces and the lower deck accommodation provide far more than you would expect of a boat at this length. Making its first appearance at Düsseldorf is young Spanish yard, Maxim Yachts, with a 13m inboard-powered day cruiser known as the MAX43 Comfort. Designed by Alex Cherigny and engineered by Spanish studio, Isonaval, the main deck is arranged around a central helm station with quadruple seats that back onto a transverse wet bar. If that much is relatively commonplace on a day cruiser with a 13ft beam, the use of lateral benches on both sides creates a huge dining station bang in the centre of the deck. Norberto Ferretti started it, and Alberto Galassi is continuing the tradition. He’s a man who likes his art, and Telli’s interior décor, by ACPV Architects, is deliberately muted, the better to set off his collection of pictures. Even if you use your boat all year round rather than tucking it away for the winter, it still pays to have a list of jobs to do over the colder months to keep everything working correctly. When we first put Jeanneau’s Prestige 36 through its paces W in 2000, we noted that this well-specced flybridge came in at an astonishing £40k less than its nearest rival. While the Prestige 36 was a tad smaller than its British competitors, the Sealine F37 and the Princess 38, there was no getting away from the fact that the Jeanneau represented an awful lot of boat for your money. Scandinavian builders are all about seakeeping and year-round capability, while the Italians like to dial up the flamboyance. The French, meanwhile, seem to delight in simply building very practical, sensible family boats, and this Antares 36 by Beneteau is a perfect example of that thinking. BOATHOUSE HYTHE For boaters visiting Southampton Water, a berth for the night will most likely be found somewhere along the estuary’s easterly aspect – either on the rivers Hamble or Itchen or in the heart of Southampton itself at ABP’s Town Quay marina. Making its world debut in Düsseldorf is a boat with a name that evokes plenty of happy memories for those of us who grew up in the 80s. But while the GTIs of that era were about sport, this new Galeon 435 GTI (or Grand Touring Icon) is clearly about parties. It takes all the spectacular dayboating deck space of the 435 GTO and wraps the middle half in a glass-enclosed, climate-controlled wheelhouse so you can carry on the fun when the weather turns. But the outdoor spaces remain just as strong as they always were. The aft cockpit uses a central seating/sunbed unit that can adjust to face forward or aft. More a mid-life facelift than an all-new model, the 2025 edition of the Sunseeker Manhattan 68 boasts a number of desirable upgrades for Düsseldorf showgoers to ogle. You’ll need to be quite an expert to spot them, however, as the exterior changes are quite subtle. The previous model’s shark fin side mouldings at the aft end of the flybridge have been ditched in favour of a lower, sleeker solution and the hardtop is now gloss black rather than white. The pillars supporting the flybridge overhang have also changed shape and location to accommodate a new privacy screen shielding the cockpit’s occupants from prying eyes in the marina. What you can’t see from this rendering is the flybridge’s new layout, which promises a larger, more versatile seating arrangement, new exterior upholstery…

Following on from last year’s V10 Open, Polish builder, Virtue, is using Düsseldorf as purpose four-season variant of that same platform. As the first all-weather boat in the line-up, it will use the same Swedish Petestep hull we saw on the original V10, with its unusual spray rail configuration, designed to increase efficiency and improve ride softness by diverting water downwards rather than sideways. And it will also feature a welcome update to the ergonomics, including a redesigned console, which is significantly wider, with extra space between the seats and the console, generating much better comfort for larger skippers. On this model, the original boat’s bow cabin is also supplemented with a convertible two-man settee in the pilothouse; and the pilothouse itself provides impressive headroom of 1.95m (6ft 5in). Powercats aren’t exactly famed for their good looks but this first boat from new company, Makai Yachts, aims to change all that. Developed in collaboration with Italian sports car designer, Emanuele Rossi, and built at Makai’s production facility in Croatia, the new Makai M37 draws inspiration directly from the world of classic and modern supercars. Rossi refers to the “harmony between elegance and masculinity” and, with its plunging sheerline, open transom, elevated bow and sweeping limo-style roof, this is undoubtedly one of the best looking (and most distinctive) powercats we’ve seen. As with any stylish cat, a modest beam plays an important part in that aesthetic. At 15ft 3in, or about 41% of the overall length, the profile of the M37 is a far cry from the squared off, slab-sided…

Some yards like their boats to scream performance from every angle while others prefer a subtler approach. The Sanlorenzo SP92, which made its debut at September’s Cannes show, falls firmly into the latter category. At first glance it could be mistaken for a long-range displacement cruiser. The vertical windscreen, long waterline length and relatively small white-printed portholes are usually associated with slow, comfortable explorer yachts but that’s all part of the SP92’s appeal. It’s only when you catch sight of the two huge MJP waterjets that its true potential becomes clear. Thanks to a pair of 2,000hp MAN V12 engines, this supersized sportscruiser will outpace any current Sunseeker bar the outboard powered Hawk 38 and even give the performance-oriented Pershing X-class range a decent run for its money. A pristine example of Van der Valk’s semi-custom 32m model, Jangada, was exhibited in the brokerage section at the recent Cannes Yachting Festival. It was owned by a serial customer of the Dutch yard who plans on trading up and it was a delightful looking piece of work. With styling and interior design by Nick Top and Guido de Groot, this is an all-Dutch project, with a grown-up décor of pale fabrics and light veneers and a very pleasing VIP suite forward on the main deck. The huge master cabin is down below, occupying the full beam amidships, along with a double and a twin guest cabin. It looked every bit as special as you’d expect of the flagship model in the S Class range The first time we set eyes on the S80 during September’s Cannes Yachting Festival, it was stern-to on the quay and wedged in among several other big Princesses and a number of larger models from other competitors. British newcomer Seabird Technologies is developing a high-powered electric outboard motor that promises to outperform almost every other outboard on the market. Called the 400X, it packs a peak power output of 400kW (530hp) and an even more extreme torque figure in excess of 800Nm. This puts it on a par with everything up to Mercury’s mighty 600hp V12. In fact, because of the 400X’s light weight and its electric motor’s ability to develop maximum torque from zero rpm, it could even prove to be the fastest accelerating outboard engine on the market when it enters production in 2026. BUILT 2009 PRICE £149,950 In the 30 to 40ft hardtop sportscruiser category, the SC35 is the obvious Sealine offering, but there’s an intriguing alternative – the SC38. A more expensive boat when new, it was less popular for that reason as its smaller sister seemed to offer almost as much accommodation. However, secondhand values are similar and it’s a more spacious and arguably better-looking option. 1 NEW PRINCESS X-CLASS Princess Yachts has released details of its next X-Class model. The all-new X90 slots between the current X95 Vista and the X80 and will be the first boat in the British yard’s range to offer folding balconies as an option. These will increase the size and enjoyment of what looks like being a spectacular cockpit. Featuring a glazed transom balustrade and a sociable array of stylish new modular outdoor furniture facing out over the stern and sides, it marks a significant change of direction for Princess. For many people, the really big news at Boot Düsseldorf is the world debut of Princess’s new F58. The current F55 is already one of its best selling models and this new addition to the range looks set to raise the bar even higher. As you would expect, it offers significantly more space than the F55 (it’s 1ft 8in longer and 1in wider) but it’s the F58’s extra features that are most likely to grab people’s attention. Foremost among these is a beach club stern with a folding aft bench, a dedicated Seabob garage, an oversized hydraulic platform and a transom-mounted barbecue. Italian design studio, Ferragni Progetti, has collaborated with Cobra Yachts in the creation of this latest 42ft flybridge cruiser – and while the bold window shapes and angular lines suggest a lot of effort has been put into the style, it’s the multi-function practicality that really shines. Available in either Fly or Coupé versions, both models can be specced with three cabins and three bathrooms; with two bathrooms and an enlarged owner’s cabin; or with two larger cabins and bathrooms. Remarkably, the options are every bit as flexible in terms of power too. Solaris showed off its new Power 60 Open at Cannes and now it’s preparing to unveil the Coupé version at Düsseldorf. Judging from these renderings, it looks like this may be the better choice. As an open boat, there was almost too much deck space to fill – there are only so many seats and sunpads one boat needs. But now that there’s an enclosed wheelhouse, there’s a better balance between inside and outside space, with seats and sunloungers in the cockpit, a good sized galley at the aft end of the saloon and a comfortable lounge and helm station forward. WRAP CULTURE A friend of mine has a 1989 Fairline Carrera 24 which is in good mechanical order and has no hull issues. However, it looks like an antique on the inside. It is functional and there’s nothing physically wrong with the galley or headlining – it just looks absolutely ancient. Is it possible to do a total interior surface treatment on the cheap that modernises the look? Similar to the likes of SETAG but only spending £5-10k on a 17ft boat rather than £40-50k on a 45ft one? After moving to the South Coast during the Covid pandemic, taking redundancy and completing most of the work on our new home, I began looking around for a new project to fill my time. Way back in the beginning was the Record!, an 80-foot, grey-and-yellow monohull designed by Fabio Buzzi and packing 6,000hp, built for the express purpose of making a splash. True to its name, in one hectic season more than 20 years ago it set three new longdistance powerboat records – around Italy, from Monte Carlo to London and, finally, around Britain, the latter at an average speed of more than 40 knots. I was a witness to that one, and when they came into St Katharine Docks in London, Buzzi and his navigator, Dag Pike, and co-drivers Simon Powell and Hannes Bohinc looked shattered, but justifiably pleased with themselves. A little over a year ago we brought you the EZraft, a super-lightweight inflatable that, in its smallest guise at 2.5 metres, weighed just 11kg by dint of using kite surfing technology. The only real downside was that it really was more of a raft than a dinghy, the three inflatable tubes creating a flat raised deck that meant that you sat on it, rather than in it. Since then, its designers have made a number of small but useful improvements such as a stronger transom, a better smart paddle, even more handles and reflective edges for use in the dark. Worrying about your boat sinking is enough to keep you awake at night. If outright sinkage isn’t W enough to trigger insomnia, there’s plenty of scope for other stuff, such as intruders and battery condition, to prey on your mind. Given that my own boat, Silver Bird, is a 1930s wooden gentleman’s motor yacht, I probably feel that more keenly than most. BUILT 2000 PRICE £149,950 Remarkably, the new Superhawk 55 is now the only open-cockpit sportscruiser in the range, a genre that used to be heartland stuff for the brand. Of course, the company is simply reacting to customer demand for hardtops on their large sportscruisers but it seems a shame when you scroll back a quarter of a century to boats like this gorgeous Camargue 50 that was in build from 1999-2003.
