This summer we’ll be cruising in Holland, an endlessly fascinating country for anyone keen on boats, ships and travelling by water. Behind the great North Sea dykes is a vast network of picturesque waterways, grand estuaries and rivers, peaceful meers and friendly harbours lined with Flemish houses. You can moor in the heart of famous cities or follow rural canals past neat farms and grazing cows. Yet from offshore there is absolutely no hint of these attractions. Holland’s low, flat coasts are stark and mostly featureless. Often there seems no obvious way in through the defences, despite what is shown on the chart. The East Scheldt estuary is a good example, one of the gateways into the Netherlands for UK boats and, in its strange way, as dramatic a landfall…

OFF RADAR My wife and I were recently looking at two new 40ft motor cruisers for sale at a dealer, neither of which had radar systems installed. I appreciate that not everyone wants to pay the price for such extras but when I asked the owner of the dealership about this, to my horror, he said that he doesn’t advise customers to pay for radar any more on the basis that it was no longer necessary as the installed plotters come with in-built AIS and “the two systems do much the same thing”. We then had a brief discussion about how radar and AIS work and what they do. Having done the hard yards cruising down the Atlantic coast of mainland Europe we have decided to treat ourselves to a few weeks in the Portuguese Algarve rather than pushing on into the Med before calling it quits for the season. Back at home in Germany the first leaves of autumn are already starting to fall but here in Lagos the sun is still shining out of a clear blue sky and the temperature is hovering between 25° and 30° C. SØRVÅGEN, MOSKENESØYA, NORDLAND 67º54´N 13º02´E The Lofoten archipelago is famous for its cod, with part of the catch hung outside in late winter in the cold dry air on wooden A-frames (see hillside on the right of photo). The resulting hard dessicated ‘stokfisk’ keeps for months and was eaten by Viking sailors on their long voyages. It is usually rehydrated to create a delicious meal or chewed in small pieces as a snack (perhaps with beer). The days of a noisy, smelly diesel generator disturbing the peace of a tranquil anchorage may soon be numbered. British company Triskel Marine has come up with a cleaner, quieter alternative that it claims will make conventional gensets redundant. The judges at the recent DAME Awards seem to agree, awarding the new Integrel system both a category win and the Overall Winner’s title. WHAT IS INTEGREL? Essentially, it’s a completely automatic electrical power system that generates, stores, converts and distributes electrical power on board wherever and whenever it’s needed. The system is designed to be a direct replacement for a 10kVA generator with sufficient capacity to supply all the electric demands of 40-50ft motor boat for at least 12 hours. Hill, the renowned designer and naval architect. The vessel measures 19.35 metres (63ft) long and 2.84 metres (9ft) broad, and is powered by a single Daewoo MD 196TI 179kW engine. BUILT 2009 PRICE £229,000 The early noughties was considered by many to be a golden era for Fairline boats, and the really good news is that the exemplary build quality echoed through the range from the flagship Squadron 78 downwards. So even buyers of 40-foot flybridge boats like this one benefit from fantastic attention to detail. INTERIOR Nowhere is that more obvious than inside, where the high quality wood has a superyacht level of finish to it and that attention to detail includes a sturdy handrail recessed into the saloon headlining. Since starting our annual tradition of testing something out of the ordinary over the Christmas break, we’ve been lucky enough to sea trial some pretty remarkable craft. When it comes to design language, Botnia Targas tend to modernise at roughly the same pace as the Royal Family. So imagine my surprise when I turned up to Salterns Marina in Poole and found that the Targa I had come to test was not only white – instead of the usual cream – but had black guardrails, grab handles and cleats in place of stainless steel. This is the Blackline package, a £4,788 option that sees the metalwork powder coated in black paint and, though it’s not exactly a radical departure from the Targa norm, it adds a contemporary twist and a point of difference over the standard cream and navy colour scheme. With a billion bikes on the planet built for land, Schiller Bikes decided it was time to pedal the road less travelled. Or more precisely, the water less biked. Founded by Jessica Schiller, in 2013 she became the first person in history to bike across the San Francisco Bay and Hudson River. She now heads up a company that builds recreational water bikes. Built with stainless steel and anodised parts to minimise corrosion, the Schiller water bike is ridden just like any other, propelled by pedals and steered by handlebars. It even has a fairly conventional bike frame. The difference, of course, are the floats it sits on. Last summer was our third with Artemisia, our beautiful Prestige 680 flybridge which we keep in the newly completed Marina d’Arechi in Salerno. It was yet another fabulous season, running from the end of April through to the end of October and repeating what has now become a pretty well-established routine and itinerary that involves around half-a-dozen four to five-night stays, and two extended two week-plus visits during which we covered 1,300 miles and consumed 15,600 litres of fuel. If you had to come up with the perfect type and size of family boat for UK waters, the 40ft flybridge cruiser would be right up there, a theory backed up by the sheer number in south coast marinas from Brighton to Falmouth. Big enough to go properly offshore, twin engines will give Channel-crossing confidence as well as manoeuvrability in harbours, where their relatively compact size makes handling manageable for two people. The layout works well too, with an open-air helm for good weather and an indoor driving position for days full of liquid sunshine. BUILT 1991 PRICE £85,000 Famous for its high end sailing yachts, Oyster dabbled with the motor boat market in 2005, building the elegant ‘gentleman’s motor yacht’ LD43 until 2011. What’s less well known is that this wasn’t Oyster’s first foray into motor boats. In 1989 the company brought out a very conventional looking 40ft flybridge cruiser called the Powerline 390. It was intended to be the first of a range of flybridge cruisers, but was the only Powerline model, due partly to the 1990s recession. 1 FUNKY NEW POWER CAT TAKES SHAPE An Australian company is hoping to stir up the power cat market with a radical new carbon fibre cruising catamaran. Made at a purpose-built composite specialist in China, the 60ft (18.3m) McConaghy MC59p is constructed using vacuum infusion and pressed panels of E-glass, carbon composite and Corecell for a light yet stiff hull and superstructure. With a pair of 370hp diesels the top speed is said to be 26 knots, though 8-15 knots will be the most efficient speed to maximise cruising range. The layout is based on that of McConaghy’s 60 sailing catamaran but British designer Jason Ker has comprehensively reworked the hulls to account for the heavier engines and higher 1,500-litre fuel capacity to optimise performance of the power cat. The mangrove-fringed waterway that leads to Grand Banks’ sales office and service facility in Stuart, Florida is shrouded in eerie calm. The surface of the water is mirror smooth, the milky sky and vegetation, which verges on Amazonian, is reflected so perfectly you could flip the vista upside down unnoticed. I have been a sailor all my life. At least I was until I bought a motorboat last year. My father, John Elliot, built wooden boats and founded the International Boatbuilding Training College. Whilst his sailing boats were always beautiful, they were slow and pretty cramped. Some of my earliest memories are of crossing the North Sea at the age of six on a 28ft ketch. When berthing a conventional shaft or sterndrive boat, the simplest technique is to nudge the bow in at an appropriate angle and once it’s close enough, tuck the stern in with a blip of astern as you bring the boat to a halt. It is possible to use this technique on an IPS boat but it’s not ideal as the pod drives find going diagonally relatively hard. I think it’s easier to drive an IPS boat as if it were on a chess board by moving a square at a time, either forward, backward or sideways, like the castle in a game of chess. Last winter I made the mistake of letting my boat’s batteries run flat. The local engineer who looks after them off-season thought I’d picked them up in April so by the time I finally collected them in June he’d long since stopped keeping them on charge. As a result one of them had died completely and the other still accepted a charge but its capacity had almost certainly been compromised. I decided to replace them both and take the opportunity to ensure my new battery selection was better suited to my boat’s set-up. Launched in 2013 initially as the 43 Voyager before a sudden name change to Velasco, this concept is a cross between a long distance trawler and a fast port-hopping flybridge cruiser. INTERIOR There is plenty of trawler thinking on the inside.
