Fifteen-year-old powerboat racer Harvey Smith has landed a sponsorship deal with engine distributor Barrus. The two-year deal sees Barrus supplying a new Mercury engine plus parts and technical support. Harvey has been competing in GT15 since the age of nine in the UK, European and World Championships and is the current British Champion. GT15 are small 3m monohulled powerboats raced by children between the ages of nine and 15. Never a company to shy away from a radical design brief, Italian shipyard Evo has announced plans to build a 43ft (13.04m) open sporstboat capable of 50 knots thanks to quadruple 350hp Mercury Verados. Don’t worry though, if speed isn’t high on your agenda, you can downgrade to the triple 400hp option instead. With a cruising speed of 40 knots, the CC covers big distances fast and quickly hops between anchorages. Once there, the impressive deck spaces lend themselves to long and lazy days in the sun with enough sleeping space below decks (up to four berths) for an overnight stay. Our time in the Northern Sporades is drawing to a close and regretfully we prepare to move on. We have booked flights back to Jersey in one week’s time, and we need to be in Lesvos ready for our departure. Dometic’s new lithium ion battery pack is designed specifically to keep 24V compressor coolers such as its CoolFreeze CFX, CDF and CF series of coolers and freezers operating away from shorepower, without needing to resort to running a generator. Featuring the latest Samsung technology, the high-quality battery set with lithium ion cells has an output voltage of 24V and a charging voltage of 29.4V. Charging takes around five hours, with an LED displaying the battery charge level. Once fully charged, it will run a Dometic CoolFreeze CFX 28 coolbox as a fridge, for example, for up to 60 hours. It’s certainly very distinctive and according to its well-respected designers, “It is reminiscent of early canoes and other vessels used hundreds of years ago by indigenous people all over the world.” So how big is it? 115m (377ft). Japanese car company Lexus has confirmed it will be putting its first boat into production next year. However, it will be a 65ft flybridge rather than the sleek 42ft sportsboat concept it teased us with last year. The Japanese car company originally unveiled the fully functioning 42ft concept boat in January 2017. Powered by two 5.0-litre Lexus petrol car engines and featuring a stunning curved exterior honed by the Lexus Design Centre in Japan and built in partnership with the Marquis-Larson Boat Group in the US, it would have caused quite a splash. However, Lexus has decided to play it safe by going for a more cruising-oriented flybridge boat. Available as a flybridge or a sedan, the Hylas M58 will hit the water in the spring of next year. Built under the Hylas name by Taiwanese shipyard Queen Long Marine, the naval architecture is by Zurn Yacht Design, a Massachusetts-based company responsible for a vast range of power and sailing boats including models from Marlow and MJM. Belgium has one of the most boring coastlines in the world – 36 miles of grey sand washed by grey water, broken only by the grey breakwaters of four grey harbours. But the fact most motorboaters can have lunch in Harwich and supper in Oostende made it a favourite destination for generations of east-coast boaters. At least, it did until 2010. Participation in water-based activities are the highest since records began, according to the latest UK Watersports Participation Survey. The report claims that over 16 million people took part in some form of watersport activity, although this figure includes loosely related activities such as coastal walking. Of more relevance to the marine market are the almost four million people who partook in some form of boating activity during 2017. Split almost exactly 50/50 between inland and coastal use, it’s the highest volume of participants recorded since the survey began in 2002, and a dramatic rise compared to the 2010 low point of roughly 2.7 million. A Bentley GT racer rolled into Fairline’s Oundle headquarters last month. The PR stunt was laid on to celebrate the company becoming the lead sponsor of Rick Parfitt Racing, which campaigns the car. At the Cannes Yachting Festival in September, Sunseeker will launch a sportsbridge version of its 74 Predator. The hull, engines and interior layout are identical to the sportscruiser version but there is the addition of a generously proportioned flybridge deck. Raymarine has introduced the next step in the development of its two-year-old Quantum radar. Building on the low-power clutter-free CHIRP technology of the original Quantum, the Quantum 2 adds a Doppler function to give an even clearer picture of what is going on around the boat. Doppler radar is what the police use in speed cameras: it compares the frequency of the returning echo with the frequency of the outgoing pulse. If the echo is at a higher frequency than the transmitted pulse, it means the target’s range is reducing; if the echo frequency is lower, the range is increasing. In the March issue of MBY, I wrote about taking my new Bavaria E40 flybridge on a 360nm crossing from Southampton to Sneek in the Netherlands.
