Never let it be said that we don’t listen. We’ve received a number of letters in recent weeks asking for more articles about smaller, more affordable boats and real-world cruising adventures, and hopefully this issue helps answer those pleas. I have to admit that I’m a little bit in awe of the people featured in this month’s mag. Take Nigel J-F, who has written an excellent account of his three-week lap of Britanny that included a return journey through the canals. The London Boat Show will run for just five days in January 2018, half the length of previous years. Instead of starting on a Friday and finishing ten days later on a Sunday, it will now open on Wednesday January 10 and close on Sunday June 14. Late-night Thursday, where the show remains open until 8pm, remains. The revised show will be flanked by two further exhibitions. A brand new Boating and Watersports Holiday Show, featuring ‘global and boutique brands’ will bring fresh exhibitors to the ExCeL hall, with a second show still to be announced. The organisers also promise significant extra investment in marketing. London On-Water is offering free entry to regular readers and subscribers of Motor Boat & Yachting. Although there is no charge for access to the land-based exhibits, entrance to the pontoons, where all the larger boats will be displayed, usually costs £5. The show runs from Thursday June 8 to Sunday June 10 at St Katharine Docks and is open from 11am-8pm (6pm on the last day). The event started life as the London Yacht, Jet and Prestige Show in 2015 but has undergone a subtle shift of emphasis for 2017. The private jets and helicopters have gone in favour of a larger marine element. The two electric motors that power the royal rowbarge Gloriana between events are being replaced with brand new Torqeedo motors. The 27m clinker-built barge was created as a lasting legacy to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and launched in 2012. During events, the 10-tonne barge and its full compliment up to 30 passengers is propelled by 18 oarsmen or women, but two electric motors are used to power the craft between appointments. From 2017, two of Torqeedo’s latest Deep Blue 40 Saildrive motors will propel the barge at up to six knots. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? Journalists covering the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda this year will find themselves aboard a fleet of XO 270 cabin boats. In addition, the XO DFNDR will be used for Race Course Operations and an XO 360 and an XO Cruiser will be used for Acea VIP transportation needs. At 166 years old, the race is the oldest trophy in international sport and is hotly contested by the cream of racing yachtsmen, helming some of the fastest and most advanced sailing boats on the planet. I had one a few years back and decided to get back into one after a ten-year boat break. I went for a quick trip out this evening and got about ten minutes slowly cruising downriver when the overheating alarm went off. I got a tow back. Back at the marina with the engine cooler fired up, I noticed no water coming out the top of the strainer when loosened. I turned the engine off, poured water into the strainer and fired it up again – water was still gushing. Ours is a universally popular dream: buy a boat in France, live aboard, cruise through charming villages and towns, pull over and moor wherever you like, then sit on deck sipping a chilled Sancerre. Mike Peyton’s cartoons were a regular feature in boating magazines for more than 30 years. Now, following his death in January this year, Fernhurst has released a new edition of his 2005 anthology. Mike was a sailing man through and through, so his cartoons inevitably show life from the raggie point of view. But we all have to contend with the stroppy harbourmasters, horrible weather, and pangs of jealousy at the sight of a bigger or better boat that feature in this book. Now we’ve organised Jack’s office champagne storage, the only thing left is to find a way of keeping his bottle cool when in use. Previously for Jack, this involved a butler and an ice bucket, but since relocating the office from central London to Farnborough, the butler had to go, so this brand new high-tech method might be the answer, and provide a pretty swish on-board solution for you too. Over on England’s rarely cruised east coast, 30 miles up from the Wash, the Humber estuary meets the North Sea at the long curving sandspit of Spurn Head. To southerners based in comfy Channel harbours, the Humber doesn’t sound promising cruising country. Yet Kingston-upon- Hull, once one of the world’s largest fishing ports, has a rather attractive marina. Opened in 1983, Hull Marina was developed in the Humber and Railway docks near the city centre. BoatWarden, the company that manufactures gadgets and apps allowing you to keep an eye on your boat and outboard engine through your smartphone, has now come up with a product to protect jetskis – JetSkiWarden. Using GPRS and GSM technologies, it allows you to place a ‘Geo-Fence’ (a virtual circle) around your jetski, whether it’s on your boat, a dock or a trailer. As soon as the jetski moves beyond that circle, JetSkiWarden alerts you via your mobile, and can also alert your ‘chosen support network’ – you could opt for it to alert your marina, for example or a local friend or company based close to your craft’s location. The term ‘nine axis’ is a bit of a misnomer: what it means is that both devices include three different types of sensor (accelerometer, rate gyro and magnetometer) on each of three axes. What it achieves is a unit that can be mounted in any position that is reasonably free of magnetic material, and in any orientation (even upside down), and will then provide heading information that is stable and accurate to within a couple of degrees or so regardless of the movement of the boat. What better way to put a waterproof coat through its paces than by giving it a thorough soaking on the XO DFNDR in rough seas (see p18)? I wasn’t holding out a lot of hope for it – the water was wild, the strong easterly relentless and the jacket looked like any other. A few years back, my close friend Steve had a close brush with his expiration date. He was starting his Carver 36 when the port engine backfired. He tried again and this time it fired up normally but he could here two alarms blaring, so he went to check if the engine was cooling properly. It wasn’t – the port exhaust showed no sign of either cooling water or exhaust gases coming from it. Both engines were running, so he shut them down and opened the engineroom hatch. There were a lot of exhaust fumes and water in the bilge.
