Grounded ship ‘unstable’ Official report into Hoegh Osaka grounding reveals loading issues The MAIB has released its report into the grounding of MV Hoegh Osaka last year, which resulted in a 19-day salvage operation. Investigators claim that the 180m car carrier had overestimated its ballast by 635 tonnes and underestimated the weight of its cargo by 265 tonnes prior to leaving port. This resulted in a dramatic grounding on Bramble Bank, with lifeboats and Coastguard helicopters scrambled to rescue the 25 people on board. The 86-page report reveals that one crew member was seriously injured while trying to escape the stricken vessel. The unnamed man fell 18m down a cross-alleyway, breaking an arm and a leg as a result. The report concluded: “The fundamental requirements for establishing a suitable margin…

PRIVATE ACCESS This separate stairway access to the midships cabin is the 420’s pivotal feature. It provides unparalleled privacy for the two cabins, but also presents something of an intrusive visual wall when crew first wander into the saloon. ADJUSTABLE TABLE The chunky main saloon table is neatly executed, with non-slip on the tabletop, a folding leaf that provides a speedy doubling of size, and a hi-lo leg that allows a switch between dining and coffee table duties. Those big white spongy things are there to do a job, not to be wrapped up in soft towelling like an overfed baby. However, since having my boat wrapped in silver vinyl, I’ve become rather precious about protecting its shiny new topsides and anything that helps prevent scratches or improves its aesthetics can only be a good thing. My boating began on the Norfolk Broads when I was 11, and it was through boats that my wife Mary and I met. I asked her to crew for me on a yacht, the wonderful Bessie Bell, a century-old gaff topsail sloop I owned in my 30s. After racing her successfully, our daughters began to sail and we started to consider an engine and electrics with more civilised accommodation below, as well as headroom above 4ft 6in. Chris-Craft on the block Fort Lauderdale auction for super-rare 1961 Continental 21 A rare slice of 1960s boating nostalgia – a 1961 Chris-Craft Continental 21 – has gone under the hammer. One of the earliest examples of a hardtop sportsboat, Over The Top (pictured above) was built in October 1960 and launched the following year. The auctioneers report that 96 models were built in the original production run but only 12 are known to have survived to the present day. The standout feature is a factory-fit glassfibre hardtop with aluminium supports and hinged gull-wing hatches to make boarding easier. Not yet received the full report but the surveyor has informed me of some cracking in the hull below the waterline. He says the cracks should be repaired before using the boat. “When you use a boat that much, you start to wonder what else you could be doing, where else you could be going, and who else you could be doing it with” When I was a yacht broker, I always used to warn buyers that, “boats shrink when they get wet.” What I meant by this was that once you put them in the water and start using them, what seemed as big as you’d ever need soon starts to feel a little smaller. Steady progress With wings that fold away, the new RotorSwing stabilising system is somewhat unconventional This wacky new stabilising system from Dutch company RotorSwing may look like the result of too much time spent in an Amsterdam ‘coffee shop’, but it is actually a deadly serious project. RotorSwing has bought its own test bed, a 26-knot Colvic Sunquest 43, and is developing its Wing system with the Quantum group that supplies stabilisers to the superyacht market. RotorSwing also has the benefit of having engineered the high-speed electric motors and control systems that are used on its existing Magnus stabiliser (see MBY August 2015 for our test on a Linssen Grand Sturdy), which are very similar in their execution. There’s nothing like the golden glow of a freshly cleaned teak deck to make your boat look like new – but everyone seems to have a different idea about how to achieve it. Ironically the very reason teak is so soft and grippy to walk on in wet deck shoes is also the reason that it loses its lustre so quickly. Its ability to absorb water means it also sucks in dirt and other impurities, particularly on the bathing platform where it is permanently exposed to the elements rather than sheltering beneath the cockpit canopy. Many years ago now I was nervously contemplating my first Channel crossing. I’d recently upgraded from a Princess 33 to a secondhand Princess 37 with two Mermaid 120hp engines and was keen to stretch her cruising legs with a trip across to France. We’d already undertaken a trip from the Hamble to Plymouth and it went so well that I set my heart on crossing to Cherbourg over the August Bank Holiday. The MAIB report reveals that ABP had previously removed improperly marked fishing pots from Southampton Water, but stopped doing so when it was advised that such action was beyond its legislative remit. The yard has put a V-drive shaft arrangement to good use on other models in the range but the effect is especially valuable on this boat, which is just short of 47ft (14.3m). With the engines installed well aft in the hull there is space to incorporate a fullbeam master cabin amidships plus up to two guest cabins. We bought Intuition, our Windy 52, in December 2012. Before that, we owned three smaller Windys, so we knew the brand really well. Intuition had just been refurbished externally at the Windy factory and when we first saw her in December 2012 we couldn’t believe she wasn’t brand new.
