PROBLEM
Cough, cold, and blocked noses owing to viruses are a common feature in winter. However, paediatrician Dr Asmita Mahajan from SL Raheja Hospital, Mumbai, says, “Children prone to asthma or asthma-like symptoms due to bronchospasm, tend to get exaggerated symptoms due to cold. Generally, viral upper respiratory infections worsen the symptoms of asthmatic kids. The Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection, that causes bronchiolitis, is another common illness that presents difficulty in breathing, and for which a patient may need hospitalisation for oxygen and nebulisation. Paediatrician Dr Kumud Mehta from Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, also warns of hoarse throats and painful ear infections due to the the air becoming dry and dusty.
