But once-removed pooch smooches aside, you should be grossed out too: Canines carry hundreds of different types of bacteria in their mouths, some of which can cause disease in humans, says Jason Stull, V.M.D., M.P.V.M., Ph.D., an assistant professor of veterinary medicine at Ohio State University. Granted, the key word here is “can,” since most guys’ immune systems are strong enough to fight off these bugs, says Dr. Stull.
