Warburton uses Hytro wearables, from t-shirts to shorts, to perform blood flow restriction (BFR) training. This technique combines low-intensity exercise with blood flow occlusion (restriction), to stimulate muscle development.
“We use 30% of your one-rep max, with an initial set of 30 reps to fill the muscle with blood,” says Warburton’s coach, Chris Tombs. “Then, after a short recovery (30 secs), you add another 15 reps, and another 15 and another 15 (with 30 secs rests in-between).
“So in five minutes, you have done four sets. But you get a big return: the blood flow restriction starves the muscles, so when you relieve that tension, the blood gushes into the muscles and provides additional stimulus for adaptation.”
