The health benefits of the Mediterranean diet – including promoting a healthy weight, and reducing risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, several cancers and Alzheimer’s – have long been acknowledged, but recent research has shed new light on how these improvements might come about. The diet – rich in vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, beans, whole grains and fish, but low in red meat and saturated fat – has been shown to promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, thanks to its high fibre content, and associated vitamins and minerals.1 These positive changes to the gut microbiome promoted several indicators of ‘healthy ageing’, such as strength maintenance and improved brain function.
