Having recently revisited the Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House on the Prairie book series with a young reader, I was impressed again with the skill and fortitude of Pa Ingalls. It amazed me how many log cabins he built over the course of his lifetime! Using the skills handed down to him by his family and neighbors, he created homes in the big woods, the prairie, and on a homestead.
In comparison, making a log cabin block quilt is infinitely easier! From a simple block—which is easy to learn—you can have a lifetime of pleasure in the design and construction of an endless variety of quilts, table runners, or pillows. So, here’s to our hardy pioneer ancestors, but on reflection, I’d rather pick up my needle than wield an axe.…
