As I write this letter, travel restrictions caused by COVID are just beginning to ease. (Thank goodness!) It’s been a crazy year of staying at home, cancelling visits with friends and family, bringing vacations and special trips to visit new places to a screeching halt. It’s a good thing to make a quilt to keep someone warm or to decorate a wall but there can be more to what we create than just that. As quiltmaker-artists, we are able to express concepts in our quilts. In this issue, we’ve given you some ideas to illustrate a physical location—a chance to visit someplace new without leaving your home or a way to remember a really special place you’ve gone to in the past. You can experiment with the same idea as a way to clear some of your stash. Abigail’s quilt is very scrappy. Pay attention to the contrast of light and dark fabrics in the bands to duplicate the look. Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout to ensure all elements of the quilt fit together well. Materials: For a 6” finished square • Various strips of prints and white, trimmed to 1¼” wide• 1 (2” x 2” square) of red or red print General directions: Use ¼” seams. Press seams open after each round. Follow the diagram for placement of the strips. Assembly: Step One: Start with the 2” cut square for the center. Step Two: Cut a 2” print strip for strip #1. Sew it as shown to the center square. Step Three: Cut 1 print and 1 white strip in each of the following lengths. Sew as shown. Step Four: Trim block to 6½” square, if needed. ”I like patriotic colors and what is more patriotic than the 4th of July? On the 4th, I love to watch the firework displays. I wanted to create a quilt that would convey the feeling of a big firework exploding in the sky. When creating Boom!, I knew that a Log Cabin block would create the kind of rotation that I was looking for. This modified Log Cabin block did just the trick. I love how the colors dance in an outward direction, just like a big firework would do. The Fairy Frost fabric from Michael Miller Fabrics adds that extra sparkle. Although there are a lot of small blocks, the quilt is a breeze to stitch together with chain piecing.”…

M.C. Escher’s art has intrigued me since high school. His illusions and tessellations are absolutely spellbinding. What are tessellations? They are shapes in a repeated pattern that closely fit together without gaps or overlaps. Think hexagons and triangles—two simple tessellating shapes found in quilting. The traditional Snail Trail block is another example. And that is the block that attracted me to Maria Umhey’s Big Sky Blues quilt from McCall’s March/April 2014 issue. The spiral pattern in the Snail Trail creates such great movement. But the piecing looks a bit too complicated—right? Wrong! This is essentially a Four-Patch in the center of an Economy block. About twenty years ago, in a guild meeting in Leavenworth, Kansas, a quilter showed a patchwork quilt that really caught my eye. After complimenting my fellow guild member, she pointed out that it was “just a Jacob’s Ladder design with Nine-Patches instead of Four Patches.” Ah, ha! This was prior to the invention of cell phones with cameras, so I am relying on my memory—I think her triangle squares were black and white and the Nine-Patches were colorfully scrappy. Fast forward twenty years, and I am finally making a variation of her Jacob’s Ladder variation by alternating Ladder blocks with Star blocks. Vivika DeNegre Creative Director “The Gates” is a mixed-media quilt that features snippets of actual orange gate fabric distributed to onlookers at the Christo installation in New York’s Central Park. The buildings and background were made primarily of paper from maps, vintage postage stamps, and magazines. It was stitched by machine, and then framed. The name of the Dala horse comes from Dalarna, a province in central Sweden. Legend says in the winter of 1716, King Charles XII of Sweden was waging war all over Europe and had soldiers staying in private homes. The winter was especially harsh, so the soldiers were often cold and hungry. One soldier carved a horse, painted it red (a color of paint procured from copper mines in the area), added some flourishes for the bridle and saddle, and gave the small horse to a child in the home. The child’s mother gave the soldier a bowl of soup. Soon all the soldiers in the area were making horses and trading them for food. The Dala horse is now a symbol of the Swedish culture.
