I was at the local Farmer’s Market recently, and one of my favorite stands is a particular flower stand. Not only are the flower combinations lovely and unusual, but the colors are breathtaking! It’s always so hard to decide which ones are coming home with me—the seasonal shades in a monochromatic bouquet or a bright pop of color to lighten up my kitchen or family room—too many decisions. Choosing colors for a quilt can be problematic as well. Most of the time I have a specific recipient or location for the quilt in mind, and that makes color selection a little easier. But there are times when I’m just not sure of the direction I want to go. I’ll start by combing through my fabric stash looking for inspiration. It…

Center and pin border strips to sides, top and bottom of quilt. Strips will extend beyond quilt top. Starting and stopping ¼" from quilt corners and backstitching to secure, sew strips to quilt top. Press seam allowances toward quilt center. Fold quilt on diagonal, right sides together. Align border strip raw edges and border seams at the ¼" backstitched point; pin together. Align ruler edge with fold, extending ruler completely across border. Draw line from the backstitched point to the border raw edges. Stitch on drawn line, backstitching at both ends. Press seam open. To calculate cut size: First determine at what size you want your triangle-squares to finish. The formula for calculating cut size is (x) x 2 + 1¾”. If the finished size is (x), you will multiply (x) by 2 then add 1¾”. Cut a large square of the main fabric the width of your finished flying geese units plus 1¼”. Cut four small squares of the background fabric the height of your finished flying geese units plus ⅞”. Each set of 1 large square and 4 small squares makes 4 Flying Geese. These units will finish at the correct size with no trimming needed. 1 Draw a diagonal line across each of the background squares. The digital design tools at our disposal, like Electric Quilt (from the Electric Quilt Company) and Adobe Illustrator, make project planning much easier these days. I can color, edit, plan and recolor until the design looks exactly how I want it to, without cutting a single piece of fabric. So when McCall’s Quilting received a three-color quilt design based on the traditional Hattie’s Choice block from Jean Nolte, I thought it might be fun to experiment with color and value to make the pretty design even more impressive. The final quilt design is featured and patterned on page 6. The original coloring design, shown below, is nice just as it is, and would look great in scrappy red, white and blue prints. Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances. With all the seams converging in the center of the block, it can get rather bulky in that area. One way to minimize that bulk is to press all the seams consistently, so they will nest with one another somewhat. The bulk won’t be eliminated but it will be reduced slightly. Cut out all patches listed in Cutting Instructions and follow the steps below to make the units and blocks. We’ve used red thread to make the seams visible in the photos; for best results use matching thread. 1 Align raw edges and match points of A and B. The B corner will extend beyond the A. My latest favorite bundle is Victoria by 3 Sisters for Moda Fabrics. Once I saw this bundle I just knew I needed to find a pattern for it and Silhouette Stars is the perfect choice! Since I am smitten with all the prints in this collection, I have decided to use the lighter prints for the center stars in the blocks instead of the background fabric.
