When I started quilting over 20 years ago, I still had children at home and my decorating style was not glamorous by any means. I needed things that could stand the rough-and-tumble antics of the three teenage sons who were still at home. I didn’t decorate with velvet or silk. There were no ruffles or lace. Now, my children are all grown and I have grandchildren visiting regularly so my style is still not fancy. I am a fairly ordinary person. There is nothing elegant about my decorating style. But with all the pretty threads and metallic prints on cotton fabrics (meaning they are washable), I’ve started looking for more magic in my quilts. I think it’s time to try for a little exuberance, a little extravagance in my quilts.…

Curved seams are easiest when you pin and prepare before stitching the seam. A stiletto is helpful for keeping the raw edges aligned as you sew. Fold both concave and convex patches in half, intersecting the curve, and lightly finger press to mark the center on each patch. Align center folds, with concave patch on top, and pin. Align raw edges at both ends of seam and pin. Manipulate fabric to align raw edges and pin at approximately 1" intervals until all raw edges are aligned and pinned in place. Stitch slowly, removing pins as the presser foot reaches them. To make seams extra secure, backstitch at beginning and end of seams. The glamorous sparkle and shine of metallic threads can just take your breath away. You may be attracted to these gleaming bits of fiber, imagining how they can be used in a quilt project. Then, you stop. All the hassles of using these threads come to mind–shredding, the curling, the broken threads–and you put the spool down. Liz Kettle, fiber artist and author, shared 6 keys to successfully use metallic thread in quilting in a blog post on QuiltingCompany.com in 2011. Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances. When perusing through the extensive collection of McCall’s patterns, I decided to narrow my search to include single block patterns that I could recolor to create an alternate design. Because we are focusing on adding glamour to your quilt making we’re sharing Vanessa’s study of silk dupioni with you in this issue of McCall’s Quilting. SILK DUPIONI IS A SPECIFIC TYPE OF SILK FABRIC. It’s a little different than what you may think of as “standard” silk, and it seems to turn up more in the quilting circuit. Silk dupioni in a quilt is not “silky,” as such. In fact, it’s somewhat rough. Silk dupioni is a crisper fabric, which actually makes it simpler to work with when sewing. COLORS ARE DRAMATIC.
