For better or worse, the definition of “charcuterie” has shape-shifted a bit in the past few years. Though it is still technically the French word for “cold, cooked meats,” menus, Instagram trends and common use have altered it to mean “platter or board containing a variety of snacks.” Generally, the foods on one of these modern charcuterie boards tend to at least feature foods you might at least eat with cured meats, such as cheeses, fruits, crackers, and honey, but just as often, the phrase “charcuterie board” is used to mean “plate of random treats.”
Usually, this is the kind of thing that disgruntles the purist in me, but as a parent trying my darndest to feed picky kids, I have come to embrace this new-fangled version of the charcuterie…
