A loud thunderstorm, going to the dentist, or taking a challenging math test may all elicit fear. Fear in these situations helps our body “stand guard” for what is to come, and it can act as a protective factor to help manage the uncertainty of future situations. Occasionally, though, repeated exposure to situations that cause fear can start to become debilitating. From peers to music to streaming services, messages that normalize substance use are everywhere. These media platforms idealize substance use, making it look cool and alluring. Though some media illustrates the consequences of substance use, this is often not the case. Instead, the frame used is one of the “cool, social teen,” someone who is fun and charismatic, someone to be. Even when consequences are shown, it’s framed as the “aloof, nonconforming teen,” someone who is weird and different but doesn’t care, someone free. These frames result in many skewed messages: everyone is using substances, it is a positive experience, and the risks are worth the reward. Before I get started, let me provide some context. I was an adolescent who misused drugs and alcohol and was undoubtedly in need of treatment. However, I grew up in the 1980s when addiction was wholly misunderstood, the stigma was almost indescribably bad and “kids” never got help for addiction or mental health.
