The numbers are staggering. Each year, more than 3 million reports of child abuse, involving more than 6 million children, are made in the United States alone. Among industrialized nations, the U.S. has one of the worst records of child deaths caused by child abuse. On average, between four and seven children succumb to injuries from child abuse and neglect each day.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked adverse childhood experiences—including abuse and neglect—to a variety of long-term health problems, such as life expectancy (two decades shorter), ischemic heart disease (IHD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), liver disease, various mental health disorders, addictions, and sexual and reproductive issues.
