Talking to our children about their size and weight can lead to unhealthy nutritional choices, say leading experts at the University of Michigan. In turn, the long-term effects of unhealthy lifestyle choices can lead to significant health and mental health challenges such as obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety, anorexia, and bulimia. These conditions can cause substantial occupational and social consequences for people as they move through life.
“Modeling healthy eating habits and exercise routines to children is highly effective in preventing these issues,” says Dr. Shefali Gandhi, a licensed psychologist in Scottsdale, Ariz. “Children who are taught how to make healthy decisions about food and exercise, and think of healthy nutrition as fuel for the body and brain, tend to have healthier outcomes.”
