Every time Rebecca Poulson sees a headline about a woman or child who has been murdered in a domestic violence incident, it takes her back to September 15, 2003 – her 33rd birthday.
It was on that spring Monday morning that Poulson’s niece and nephew, Malee and Bas, and her father, Peter, were murdered by her sister’s abusive ex-partner, who later died after being shot by police at the scene. “Reading stories about domestic violence, especially cases involving children, is traumatic and triggering,” says Poulson, who has had her own experience with an abusive partner and is now an ambassador for Our Watch, advocating for awareness. “It’s difficult to talk about what happened with my family and my own abusive relationship, but survivors’ voices need to be heard.”
