Since marie claire launched 25 years ago, we’ve been committed to celebrating and nurturing the Australian fashion industry. Every issue, we showcase local brands in our style pages and have championed countless Aussie creatives, many of whom now share the global stage. And while it’s been a huge privilege (and source of great pride) to be part of their journey to success, nothing has made us more proud than creating this month’s reportage “Country to Couture” – a celebration of Australia’s thriving First Nations fashion industry. This 12-page portfolio has been eight months in the making, since we first contacted the powerhouse people who run the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation (DAAFF), which launched the inaugural National Indigenous Fashion Awards in August. The average high-fashion beauty shoot is a spectacle of long, lithe limbs, smooth swishy hair and able bodies. But this is not your average beauty shoot. Photographed by David PD Hyde for Gucci Beauty, the campaign stars an “unconventional” cast of characters: there’s Ellie Goldstein (left), an 18-year-old with Down syndrome; French model Jahmal Baptiste (top); and body positivity advocate Enam Asiama (right). The shots have caused a stir on social media, with a picture of Gucci-clad Goldstein becoming the brand’s most-liked Instagram post ever. An IV drip can be intimidating at the best of times – the jumble of wires, mysterious liquids, bags, needles and tubes. Ella Casano, 13, who was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease at age seven, was particularly daunted by the equipment. “As I saw more children experiencing the same feelings, I became interested in creating a friendlier experience for young IV patients,” Ella said. Tales of period poverty across the globe are real and rife: in Uganda, without access to proper menstrual products, up to 86* per cent of girls miss school because of their period. In the UK, that figure sits at 49 per cent, with one in 10 women aged 14 to 21 unable to afford tampons or pads. Yet the crisis affects more than a million Australians, too. “We have so many women and girls who are dealing with period poverty right now,” says Rochelle Courtenay, founder and managing director of Australian women’s charity Share the Dignity. “Last year I met a young woman who had resorted as a teen to taking loose socks from a laundromat.
