Less than a year ago, Brisbane personal trainer Rochelle Courtenay read a magazine article about the difficulties homeless women face accessing sanitary materials. The reality shocked her – many women stuff their underwear with newspaper, table napkins or toilet paper – and she was spurred into action, asking her clients if they could donate a few packets of pads and tampons, which she would distribute to local shelters. With just one text, Courtenay gathered 450 packets. That was in March 2015. London-based artist Hassan Hajjaj snapped the bad-ass biker girls of Morocco’s Marrakesh for his Kesh Angels photographic project, while on a trip back to his home country in 2013. The women, many of them mothers who work 10-hour days as henna tattoo artists in the tourist-heavy central parts of the city, sport colourful, eye-catching hijabs (polka dots and camo prints feature heavily) and are biking enthusiasts.
