I haven’t fully processed everything that happened during 2020-2021 and sweet nutcracker, here we are—it’s the last month of 2022. Before we can say “year of recovery”, we’ll be ringing in the lunar new year soon. Let that sink in... Chinese New Year songs are round the corner. How are you doing? The end of the year allows for charming concepts like “decks of holly”, “secret Santa exchange” and “refined carbohydrates” to bubble up onto the surface. I look at my December calendar of events and instantly gained six pounds. What’s not to love? Apart from all the food, drinks and party outfits (content of which we have plenty of on p.48, p.116 and p.180), what I also cherish about this time of the year is the abundance of cheesy…

This month, she styled the fashion shoot, in Paris. GAVIN YEUNG Gavin Yeung is dining editor at Tatler Dining Hong Kong. On October 12, we unveiled the latest Gen.T List 2022 in a private event held at Suzie Wong in Kuala Lumpur, with honourees of the Malaysia community in attendance. Presented in partnership with our regional headline sponsor Credit Suisse and local sponsor Chopard, the dinner saw the 2022 honourees mingling with past years’ honourees and the Tribe—a panel of industry experts who helped nominate and vet candidates for the list. Tribe members in attendance included 1337 Ventures’ Bikesh Lakhmichand, ScaleUp Malaysia’s Aaron Sarma and Earth Heir’s Sasibai Kimis. An event highlight was the Gen.T x Credit Suisse Social Impact Awards, which was presented to one Malaysian honouree this year: Syed Zain Almohdzar of Klean, the company behind the country’s first reverse vending machine that recycles plastic waste and aluminium cans.…
“Lain kali go marry a local Malaysian men [sic] abroad if you want your kids to have Malaysian citizenships.” “The law is to protect Malaysian women as our precious asset, so please think and choose wisely before getting marry [sic].” “Government always follow the dad. This is something u need to adapt to.” From xenophobic comments that deem children born abroad as “outsiders” and “threats to national security”, to ones that outright penalise Malaysian women for marrying abroad and tell them to have their children follow the father’s citizenship as they presumably “follow the father’s surname”, or because the fathers were “heads of their households”, these were what Malaysian mothers contended with over Twitter when they shared their personal struggles on conferring citizenship to their children. The crux of the…
Though born locally, Warren Kwa didn’t spend much time living in Malaysia, having moved overseas from young. He’s back now, and bringing a revolution to the local cocktail scene via Tap Tap, which provides cocktails on tap. It all began in 2021, when Kwa gathered a few like-minded individuals who shared a passion for cocktails to cofound the business. “We all enjoy cocktails, but it can become a pretty pricey affair, and so would have to limit ourselves to enjoying maybe two or three cocktails only,” admits Kwa. He then shares about how he drew inspiration from a bar he came across in New York, called Yours Sincerely which served cocktails on tap. “When I went in, I was like ‘oh wow, what a smart creative idea.’” Here in Kuala…
