THIS MONTH we are celebrating both Valentine’s and Chinese New Year—which therefore calls for a double celebration! And the common thread for these festivities, besides the colour red, is the upholding of love and family. Even your best buddies can give you this familial feeling. I’ve always loved this line by Vin Diesel: “I’ve got no friends, I’ve got family.” Family or not, this circle of trust is a gift to be cherished and treasured, not to be taken for granted. Lovingly crafted out of chocolate and marzipan by the hotel’s pastry team, each bauble represented a life given to a child. Replete with food, festive carols, gifts from Santa and more, the official tree lighting ceremony was a real treat for the visiting group of underprivileged and refugee children from Tasputra Perkim, Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. EAT, DRINK AND BE MARRIED Golden…
What led to the organisation of Jumpa Dalam Reban: On The Malaysian Vinyl Trail? I received a phone call from Daryl Goh (journalist, deejay and music enthusiast) who was approached by Ilham to put together a vinyl listening session for old Malaysian music, and he asked me if we could do it together, because he knew that we had some interesting vinyls and recordings in our Penang House of Music Collection, and I agreed. How did it all start? It all began as a passion when we started putting together personality profiles of Penang musicians for the Penang Island Jazz Festival’s Jazz Gallery sometime in 2007; it came to the attention of the Penang State Museum which led to a collaboration between them with James Lochhead and I, to set…
