YES I believe that name-dropping to simply climb the social ladder is extremely distasteful, however, there are certain situations when it is acceptable. I would not call it name-dropping per se, but rather a way to find common ground with someone who you just met or are trying to have a conversation with—for instance at a dinner party or social gathering. This is just to break the ice and more for bonding purposes as opposed to using someone’s name to curry favour.
