Oh, those glorious prints, I can hardly keep up with all the exciting new fabric designs and collections, but it’s certainly delightful to try! We asked designers how fabrics might influence their quilt designs, and they returned with a treasure trove of ideas I can’t wait for you to see. This 16-patch block design is fantastic for using up smaller scraps from your scrap bin! The magic becomes apparent when multiple blocks are joined together, resulting in a fun secondary design that appears as though the four central patches in each block are layered over a checkerboard background. To achieve the same effect, use your darkest value for the central four patches, then light and medium values on the opposing diagonal corners of each block. Since all the patches in the block are cut at 2½" square, this design is also a great way to use up remainders from those fun precut 2½" strips. 1. Trace appliqué motif onto paper side of fusible web, making a separate tracing for each appliqué needed. 2. Roughly cut out drawn appliqué shape and follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse to wrong side of appliqué fabric. 3. With small, sharp scissors, carefully cut out drawn shape. 4. Peel off paper backing. Position appliqué in place on background fabric, and fuse shape in place. 5. Using coordinating thread and your preferred stitch, machine appliqué outline of shape. 6. A satin stitch will completely cover the edge, but a blanket stitch or zigzag stitch will also work to secure edges. INTERMEDIATE 4600 TV SERIES SNEAK PEEK EPISODE 4602 FINISHED SIZE: 17" × 42" Angela used sentimental silk ties and classic Dresden Plate templates to create a dramatic quilt-as-you-go table runner. She placed large tie blades at the ends and mixed and matched large and small tie blades in the middle, allowing her to arrange each tie design for the most striking effect. Because each blade has the same 10-degree angle and seam length, the runner will lay straight as long as the broader point of each tie blade is rotated throughout. Choosing a quilting design for the quilt top you have worked so hard to create can feel like an overwhelming task. Fortunately, with a few easy tips and guidelines you can take your quilt top to the next level by letting it shine! Here are five things I consider when choosing edge-to-edge quilting designs for my clients’ and my quilts. Overall Pattern Compatibility When choosing the quilting pattern, each quilt is going to have a unique feel or a style. 1. Place fabric pieces larger than section 1 and 2 right sides together on back side of paper. Be sure fabric for section 1 is under that area and edges of fabric extend at least ¼" past stitching line. 2. Using 90/14-sized needle and a short stitch length so papers will tear off easily, stitch on line between two areas, extending stitching into seam allowances at ends of seams. 3. It’s a common rookie experience: The fabric you lovingly, painstakingly selected gets sliced up for your patchwork and the result is…not good. This is not because you can’t pick beautiful fabric! Nine times out of ten, you have a scale problem. Scale and Why It Matters “Scale” is the relative size of the design on a piece of printed fabric. This is typically measured in square inches. A fabric with 10 polka dots per square inch would be considered a “small scale” print—that’s a lotta dots. A floral fabric with petals that measure 3” across? Large scale, definitely. And since scale covers a spectrum, there’s everything in between these examples, too! If you slice up a flower that measures 3" across into 2½" strips, you’ll get some sections of the…
