1. Mark center of curve on both patches by folding in half and creasing. 2. Working with background patch on top, pin at curve centers, taking a small bite with pin. Pin at both ends of seam, taking deep bites with pins. 3. Align pieces at beginning of seam. Sew to middle of curve, using your fingertips, a stiletto, or a wooden skewer to help keep curved edges aligned. 4. Leaving needle down, raise presser foot and re-align curved edges as needed. About 1” from end, adjust top fabric so ending edges are also aligned. Sew to end. 5. Using straight-tipped snips, clip curved seam to allow it to fold easily. 6. Entrepreneurial Spirit As we celebrate a quarter-century of Love of Quilting, we stumbled upon this gem from 2002. We're sharing it once more as a heartfelt tribute to the visionary founders of the magazine, Marianne Fons and Liz Porter. When we accepted Dennis Naughton's invitation to present a lecture as part of the University of Iowa's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Program, we were a little less sure of ourselves than when we speak to a group of quilters. We spoke to over 500 students, faculty, and business people. We showed a handful of slides that told the story of our meeting in the mid-1970s in a beginner's quilting class offered by the Madison County Extension Office and becoming local quilting teachers. TRUNK SHOW Lessons from a Lifetime of Quilting Like many quilt artists, Allison Harris grew up with a mom who made beautiful quilts. But it wasn't until Harris saw a particular quilt in a magazine that she fell in love with the idea of creating a quilt herself. That quilt led to many more quilts and a life designing an array of exciting quilt patterns and colorful fabrics. “When I first started designing, I used to look for inspiration in external sources like Pinterest, magazines, and books. Now I find more inspiration when I step back from all those things. 1. Ask yourself, “What style am I looking for?” Modern, traditional, art quilting? Check out potential longarm quilters’ social media posts or websites to see their work. It's never a good idea to bring a quilt to a quilter and tell them to quilt it exactly like someone else. For one thing, our quilting is like our handwriting, and it will look different. 2. How should I prepare my top and backing? Every longarm quilter has specific needs, so it's always a good idea to ask. Typically, the backing should be straight on all sides and 3-4 inches larger than the top. 1. Cut strips for binding 1½” wide. Cut strips for accent (piping) 1¾” wide. Join strips using diagonal seams to make two long strips, one for binding and one for accent. TIP: When joining, offset strips so seams won't hit at the same place. 2. Join long strips with right sides facing. Press seam toward binding fabric, then fold pieced binding in half lengthwise, aligning raw edges. Press. 3. Attach binding to back of quilt, mitering corners and joining ends in usual manner. 4. Press binding away from quilt as shown, then fold binding to front of quilt. 5. 1. Trace appliqué motif onto paper side of fusible web, making a separate tracing for each appliqué needed. 2. Roughly cut out drawn appliqué shape and follow manufacturer's instructions to fuse to wrong side of appliqué fabric. 3. With small, sharp scissors, carefully cut out drawn shape. 4. Peel off paper backing. Position appliqué in place on background fabric, and fuse shape in place. 5. Using coordinating thread and your preferred stitch, machine appliqué outline of shape. 6. A satin stitch will completely cover the edge, but a blanket stitch or zigzag stitch will also work to secure edges. 1. Place fabric pieces larger than section 1 and 2 right sides together on back side of paper. Be sure fabric for section 1 is under that area and edges of fabric extend at least ¼” past stitching line. 2. Using 90/14-sized needle and a short stitch length so papers will tear off easily, stitch on line between two areas, extending stitching into seam allowances at ends of seams. 3. Open pieces and finger press the seam. Right sides of fabrics will be facing out on back side of pattern. 4. Turn unit over and fold back paper on stitched line. Trim seam allowance to ¼”. 5. 1. Cut a square large enough to make the bias size strip needed (see chart). Cut square in half diagonally. TIP: Pin the “top” and “bottom” outer edges to remember straight-of-grain in the next step. 2.
