I am honored to introduce myself as the new Editor of Love of Quilting. For me, traditional quilting embodies elusive emotions that are challenging to convey. It connects us to the past, present, and future; it is both creative expression and an expression of love in giving; it is a gentle art but can also be powerful; it is old, yet it is new. When I first began longarm quilting, I tried using hand quilting stencils to mark quilt borders. Invariably, the stencil’s spacing never matched the border’s length so I had to stretch and adjust the pattern between each repeat segment. Though that worked okay with leaves and swirls, it was much harder to manipulate feather stencils where there was no visible breaking point. As my confidence with freehand quilting grew, so did my impatience with using stencils, so I switched to using only reference lines to guide my design placement. Not only did it speed up the quilting process, but it gave me more creative freedom because I didn’t have to stress about staying exactly on a marked stencil line. That was a relief in itself! The Prairie Lily block and quilt featured on episode 3804 was inspired by the sampler quilt on Barbara J. Eikmeier’s video series, Block-by-Block (from Quilting Daily TV). 1. Cut a square large enough to make the bias size strip needed (see chart). Cut square in half diagonally. TIP: Pin the “top” and “bottom” outer edges to remember straight-of-grain in the next step. 2. Align raw, straight-of-grain edges with right sides facing, and allow ¼" of 45º tip to extend on either side as shown. 3. Pin raw edges. 4. Sew triangles together with ¼" seam. 5. Press seam open. You will have an unusual, rhombus shape. TIP: The equation to determine the length you need is: [(height of quilt + width of quilt) x 2] + 10. 6. 1. Place fabric pieces larger than section 1 and 2 right sides together on back side of paper. Be sure fabric for section 1 is under that area and edges of fabric extend at least ¼" past stitching line. 2. Using 90/14-sized needle and a short stitch length so papers will tear off easily, stitch on line between two areas, extending stitching into seam allowances at ends of seams. 3. Open pieces and finger press the seam. Right sides of fabrics will be facing out on back side of pattern. 4. Turn unit over and fold back paper on stitched line. Trim seam allowance to ¼". 5. From 1962 to 1980, Glenna Boyd of Burleson, Texas, published Aunt Kate’s Quilting Bee. Eventually a semiannual publication, the magazine specialized in hard-to-find and older patterns that may have never been in print. She also ran contests where readers submitted their own designs for publication. Between the heydey of quilting in the 1930s and the revival sparked by the bicentennial in 1976, there was a lull in quilt-making. Glenna Boyd and her Aunt Kate’s Quilting Bee were instrumental in keeping quilting alive. The designs featured were often unique, routinely complex, and always worth it! • Because it is more loosely woven, fannel tends to ravel and shrink more. It can be helpful to serge or overcast cut edges prior to washing. • Wash fannels in a gentle cycle prior to cutting and sewing. A lot happened during the height of the pandemic. Last winter was an especially fraught and trying time, with people stuck indoors unable to socialize. Many quilters and textile artists sought relief and meaning through needle and thread. Textile surface design artist Lisa Chin was no exception. “I often become obsessed with a color scheme and go for it. Lately that color scheme has been gradations of one color, more than a single color in and of itself. I dyed several gradations of blue fabric and wanted to use them all up. Barbara used a lot of di›erent prints to give her quilt a big dose of scrappy variety. Our pattern gives instructions for no wasted patches or units, with each assorted print appearing in two blocks. If you’d like to include more fabrics, you may end up with some extra patches and units. To use a different set of cream and red prints for each block, you will need the following: • From assorted cream prints, cut 16 sets of 8 matching patches: 2 A’s, 3 B’s, 1 D, and 2 G’s. • From assorted red prints, cut 16 sets of 4 matching patches: 2 A’s and 2 C triangles. You will have 1 unit 1 and 1 C triangle left over from each block.…

1. For ¼"-wide finished strips, cut 1¼"-wide bias strips. Fold strips in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing, and machine-stitch ¼" from folded edge. 2. Trim seam allowance to ⅛". 3. Insert ¼"-wide bias bar into sewn strip. 4. Adjust strip so seam is centered on bar. 5. Spray with starch and press seam allowance to one side of strip. 6. 1. Trace appliqué motif onto paper side of fusible web, making a separate tracing for each appliqué needed. 2. Roughly cut out drawn appliqué shape and follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse to wrong side of appliqué fabric. 3. With small, sharp scissors, carefully cut out drawn shape. 4. Peel off paper backing. Position appliqué in place on background fabric, and fuse shape in place. 5. Using coordinating thread and your preferred stitch, machine appliqué outline of shape. 6. A satin stitch will completely cover the edge, but a blanket stitch or zigzag stitch will also work to secure edges. TIP: To keep dark background fabrics from showing through, fuse a white lining fabric to light-colored appliqué fabric before cutting out the shape. 1. Trace appliqué template onto heat-resistant template plastic. Cut template out and smooth any bumps with an emery board. 2. Trace appliqué shape onto wrong side of fabric using template. Cut fabric ¼" outside drawn line. Clip curves and points as needed. 3. With template on wrong side of fabric, apply starch to seam allowance and press toward back of template. 4. Continue starching and pressing until all necessary edges are turned under. Remove template. 5. Place appliqué shapes onto background fabric, layering as needed. Baste using pins or fabric glue. 6.
