The Sky Rocket pattern was published in 1931. Credited to Ruby Short McKim, it appeared in her book 101 Patchwork Patterns, as well as her nationally syndicated column, Patchwork Sampler Quilt. Ruby, a Kansas City designer, was educated at the New York School of Design. She believed that art should be available to all, and was a proponent of embellishing even the most humble of household items. She was an innovator among pattern designers of the day, providing—in addition to color suggestions—a bit of piecing instruction and occasionally even yardage amounts. 1. Begin with strip cut to desired height of triangle, plus ⅞" for seam allowance. Place ruler on strip, aligning 60° mark on ruler with one long edge of strip and trim. 2. Reposition strip and align 60° mark on ruler with cut edge. 3. Cut to make triangle. 4. Align 60° mark on ruler along top edge of strip. 5. Cut to make another triangle. Quilter, pattern designer, and author Cheryl Brickey began using precut fabrics early in her quilting journey for a purely practical reason: she liked scrappy quilts and didn’t have a fabric stash. Charm packs of 5-inch squares offered an easy and affordable way to get 20–30 coordinating prints to use in her quilt. From that practical beginning, Brickey developed creative ways to use precuts in traditional and modern quilt designs. She recently published Just One Charm Pack Quilts, a book of 18 projects using your charm pack stash (C&T Publishing, June 2021). • Karen suggests using Crayola brand crayons. • Consider crayon colors that match well with the embellishments you plan to use. • Make sure the surface under your fabric is smooth, or the texture will come through as you color. • Karen recommends holding the crayons with the same part of the crayon always facing up. That way, there is a smooth edge for filling spaces and a nice point if you need to color small spaces. • For tight areas that need coloring, try using newly sharpened color pencils, then wax crayons over that. • Color with lightest colors first and continue to add color and shading, pressing with a fresh paper towel each time. 1. Trace appliqué motif onto paper side of fusible web, making a separate tracing for each appliqué needed. 2. Roughly cut out drawn appliqué shape and follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse to wrong side of appliqué fabric. 3. With small, sharp scissors, carefully cut out drawn shape. 4. Peel off paper backing. Position appliqué in place on background fabric, and fuse shape in place. 5. Using coordinating thread and your preferred stitch, machine appliqué outline of shape. 6. A satin stitch will completely cover the edge, but a blanket stitch or zigzag stitch will also work to secure edges. Be sure fabric for section 1 is under that area and edges of fabric extend at least ¼" past stitching line. 2. Using 90/14-sized needle and a short stitch length so papers will tear off easily, stitch on line between two areas, extending stitching into seam allowances at ends of seams. 3. Appliquéing a light fabric over a darker or print fabric can create “shadowing”—where hints of the darker bottom layer peek through the light top layer. For Tangerine Trellis, we used a faced appliqué method which helps this problem by adding a neutral layer of interfacing between the white and orange fabrics. If that isn’t enough to hide the dark fabric, try cutting an A patch (without seam allowances) from a lightweight white solid fabric and layer it between the white appliqué fabric and interfacing. Or you can carefully trim the dark fabric away from the seam allowance. Make a test block to find the technique that works best for you!…
