I took a class from Cindy Hathaway shortly after Links was featured in the September/October 2012 issue of Love of Quilting. After a pause for numerous graduation, wedding, and baby quilt gifts, I finally finished Links this winter, and I will be keeping it for myself! Fusing the arcs in place is an interesting technique, allowing you to make choices about when and how to quilt your project. If you wanted, you could quilt the entire background before fusing the arcs in place. This would create a textural difference between the background and the arcs. Or, you could quilt everything at once as you stitch your arcs in place. For rag-edge appliqué, straight stitching your arcs in place is a good option. For more decorative options, use a contrasting thread (if you’re brave) or a coordinating thread (if you’re cautious), and explore the stitches on your machine—blanket stitches, branching stitches, cross stitches, vining flowers… Get creative with your stitch play!…

When thumbing through quilting magazines or books, or spinning the pattern rack at the local quilt shop, what’s one thing you never see in the photos? The back of the quilt! Why is that? Is it because once the top is stitched, we make a quick backing choice so we can start something new? Is it because we never make our bed with the quilt “wrong side out” for everyone to see, so we choose whatever is inexpensive or simply convenient? 1. Identify desired motif. Using template plastic cut to desired unfinished size or a fussy-cutting window, center motif within patch shape. 2. Quilt styles pass into fashion and out as noted in our 2020 anniversary series. One trend 175 years ago was a rage for red and green appliqué, observed by a reporter visiting South Carolina’s 1856 state fair: “The ladies now, as in olden times, have a mania for fancy bed quilts...over forty different styles of laid work...besides any quantity of patch work.” Laid work was what we call appliqué, differentiated then from patch work or pieced pattern. Several factors influenced the look—Pennsylvania-German quilters love of folk art’s primary colors, a vogue for friendship albums, and the new availability of cheap, colorfast green and Turkey red prints. As the chintz look came to be seen as “chintzy,” quiltmakers cut calicos and plain cottons into stylized florals, classical laurels, and fanciful birds.…

1. Cut a square large enough to make the bias size strip needed (see chart). Cut square in half diagonally. 2. Align raw, straight-of-grain edges with right sides facing, and allow ¼" of 45º tip to extend on either side as shown. 3. Pin raw edges. 4. Sew triangles together with ¼" seam. 5. Press seam open. Yuletide Stars is a great design that can also be easily transformed into a tree skirt for a small tree. After quilting the table topper, carefully cut a straight line from the outside edge at a corner between 2 blocks to the quilt center. Cut a circle in the center large enough to fit the tree trunk. Refer to Continuous Bias Strips in Sew Easy Lessons. From the red solid, cut 1 square 24" to make 230" of 2 ½"-wide bias strips for binding.
