1. Mark center of curve on both patches by folding in half and creasing. 2. Working with background patch on top, pin at curve centers, taking a small bite with pin. Pin at both ends of seam, taking deep bites with pins. 3. Align pieces at beginning of seam. Sew to middle of curve, using your fingertips, a stiletto, or a wooden skewer to help keep curved edges aligned. 4. Leaving needle down, raise presser foot and re-align curved edges as needed. Roughly cut out drawn appliqué shape and follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse to wrong side of appliqué fabric. 3. With small, sharp scissors, carefully cut out drawn shape. 4. Peel off paper backing. Position appliqué in place on background fabric, and fuse shape in place. 5. Using coordinating thread and your preferred stitch, machine appliqué outline of shape. 6. Do you remember playing with an Etch-a-Sketch? One small white knob let you draw vertical lines, while the other created horizontal ones. Creating stick houses or mazes was easy—but learning how to move both to make diagonal lines was next to impossible. Most of us were amateurs whose sketches looked like we’d just graduated kindergarten, though a few budding Rembrandts always managed to create spectacular masterpieces! Quilts cycle through phases: Colors trend in and out; standards slide up and down. The “Fifties Quilt” might be recalled as a low point in quilt history when enthusiasm for modern design, faith in industrial production and novel sewing machine technology combined to cast old-fashioned handwork into a dark age. Yet quilters soldiered on amid synthetic fabrics, clashing new shades, and a fashion for large-scale prints rather unsuitable for precision patchwork. No one ever called Fifties design subtle. Print designers, intoxicated with new dyes, combined colors with few technical restrictions. Quilters followed their lead. Rules for selecting a quilt palette: Any color goes with any other color.
