If variety is the spice of life, that explains the appeal of sampler quilts, which feature a “sampling” of many different quilt blocks. Each block in the quilt offers a unique construction and look, and a new opportunity to play with fabric placement. “I get bored making 52 of the same block,” admits Scott Flanagan, sampler quilt designer and teacher. “I really enjoy samplers.” In addition to the variety, Flanagan believes sampler quilts appeal to a range of skill levels for other reasons. “For beginners, you’re going to learn a lot along the way, but one or two blocks every month—that’s not as scary as a full quilt,” he says. “For more experienced quilters, often they’re picking up blocks that they can run with for other ideas. 1. Place fabric pieces larger than section 1 and 2 right sides together on back side of paper. Be sure fabric for section 1 is under that area and edges of fabric extend at least ¼" past stitching line. 2. Using 90/14-sized needle and a short stitch length so papers will tear off easily, stitch on line between two areas, extending stitching into seam allowances at ends of seams. 3. Open pieces and finger press the seam. Right sides of fabrics will be facing out on back side of pattern. 4. Turn unit over and fold back paper on stitched line. Trim seam allowance to ¼". 5. 1. Place first fabric strip right-side up on paper foundation. Strips should extend off foundation’s edge. Place second strip right-side down over first strip, aligning long edge, and sew. 2. Press strips open. 3. Repeat sew-and-flip process until paper foundation is covered. 4. Ah, balance—we hunger for it in all aspects of our lives! Work/life balance. Diet/ exercise balance. The holy grail for quilters is…top thread/bobbin thread balance! By definition, achieving “balance” requires a willingness to make adjustments to proportions to achieve it, especially when the elements are different. Quilts themselves have several different elements including the top thread, bobbin thread, batting, and fabric. As longarm quilters, we add even more elements—our movement speed, quilting direction, fabric tautness, stitch length, even needle size. That’s a lot of variable elements! Forty years ago quilters were fascinated by pieced patterns, looking outside the box. We explored secondary patterning beyond the block, repeating seam lines but not shading. What happened when you alternated darks and lights? Shaded the lightest blocks in the center and darkest around the edges? Fragmented blocks into borders? can't imagine snipping over 200 triangles with scissors We were four years past America’s Bicentennial celebration, credited with creating renewed interest in handcraft. More important to quilt history was 1971’s exhibit, Abstract Design in American Quilts at New York’s Whitney Museum. Curators Jonathan Holstein and Gail van der Hoof showed stunning antiques from their collection, blurring lines between fine art and folk art. 1. Start by cutting out a central patch. Here, we’re cutting a triangle, but any shape could work. 2. Lay central patch right-side up on foundation. Lay second patch right-side down, aligning it with edge of central patch. Sew through all layers, using a ¼" seam allowance. 3. Open out second patch, and press. Add next patch along edge, then sew and press open. 4. Continue adding strips clockwise until foundation is covered, alternating sizes and shapes as desired. 5. To square up, turn unit foundation-side up. Trim excess fabric even with edges of foundation, or use fussy-cut windows to determine finished unit. 6. Keep it crazy!
