As the year draws to a close, and the chill of winter keeps us close to home, it’s natural to look back at all you’ve accomplished… And want to celebrate it! It’s been a transformative year at Love of Quilting, as we’ve moved our offices from Des Moines, Iowa, to Golden, Colorado, to join our sister publications. We’ve said a sad goodbye to dear friends, and a joyful hello to new ones, settled into new spaces, and amidst it all, pieced and patched together some marvelous things! ‘Tis the season to celebrate, and we’ve decide to celebrate our stitches with a true maker’s joy! I fell in love with the pattern by Marianne Fons, called Boughs & Berries, from the November/December 2015 issue of Love of Quilting. I chose to use Christmas fabric from my stash that just felt ‘right.’ I love this quilt so much, it’s out year-round! Karen L. 1. Referring to Measuring Quilt Center Diagram, measure your quilt length through the middle of the quilt rather than along the edges. In the same manner, measure quilt width. Add to your measurements twice the planned width of the border plus 2". Trim borders to these measurements. 2. On wrong side of quilt top, mark 1/4" seam allowances at each corner. 3. Fold quilt top in half and place a pin at the center of the quilt side. Fold border in half and mark center with pin. 4. With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, match center pins on the border and the quilt. Working from the center out, pin the border to the quilt, right sides facing. The border will extend beyond the quilt edges. Do not trim…

1. Trace or make photo copies of the foundation pattern. Be sure the pieces are numbered to indicate the stitching order. 2. Using fabric pieces that are larger than the numbered areas, place fabrics for section #1 and section #2 right sides together. Position paper pattern on fabrics with printed side of paper facing you (Photo A). Make sure the fabric for section #1 is under that area and that edges of fabrics extend ¼" beyond stitching line between the two sections. 3. Using a short machine stitch so papers will tear off easily later, stitch on line between the two areas, extending stitching into seam allowances at ends of seams. 4. Madge Ziegler is a name that might be familiar to longtime Love of Quilting readers and TV viewers: she designed a series of Christmas ornaments and a seasonal wreath that have appeared both in print and on the “Love of Quilting” PBS show. A quilter since 1976 and a teacher since 1979, Madge lectures and conducts workshops throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and teaches for local shops. Madge Ziegler of Newark, Delaware, learned to sew at the age of 8 in 4-H using her grandmother’s converted treadle sewing machine. Two years later, her godmother gave her a new Singer 401A for her birthday, a machine Madge sewed on for many years and still owns. She learned a variety of handwork techniques over the years, including macramé, and regularly pulled various patterns…

I am waiting for some clever millennial to come up with a ‘perpetual bobbin’ for sewing and quilting machines. Can you imagine never having to wind another bobbin? That brilliant person will be filthy rich! I’m told by engineering types that such a thing already exists—but it’s a chain stitch machine. If you pull on one end of a chain-stitched thread, the entire stitching line pulls right out! Probably not the best way to stitch a quilt. Well, if we’re stuck winding bobbins until some genius has an ‘aha’ moment, then it pays to learn as much as we can about current bobbin technology. NOTE: Choose a lightweight fusible product. The staff at your favorite quilt shop can recommend brands. Always read and follow manufacturer’s instructions for proper fusing time and iron temperature. 1. Trace appliqué motif onto paper side of fusible web, making a separate tracing for each appliqué needed (Photo A). 2. Roughly cut out drawn appliqué shape and follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse to wrong side of appliqué fabric (Photo B). 3. With small, sharp scissors, carefully cut out the drawn shape. 1. Mark center of curve on both pieces by folding in half and creasing or by making a small clip (Photo A). 2. Working with background piece on top, pin at curve centers, taking a small bite with the pin. Pin at both ends of seam, taking deep bites with the pins (Photo B). 3. Align pieces at beginning of seam. Stitch to middle of curve, using your fingertips, a stiletto, or a wooden skewer to help keep curved edges aligned (Photo C). 4.
