There’s never been a finer group of people than quilters! You all are creative and kind, passionate and practical, friendly and hardworking, patient and astonishingly resourceful! (We never get tired of our reader-submitted tips!) This issue is, in so many ways, a celebration of our community of quilters, and the way we inspire one another. Take Martha, Martha (page 70). Originally part of a block swap with Liz Porter, Angela Steiner’s quilt was shared on episode 3112 of PBS’“Love of Quilting.” Angela’s quilt was so fabulous, we decided to pattern it. It’s an example of a community of quilters coming together to share and swap, inspire each other, and challenge one another—and use classic quilt blocks from previous generations of quilters! I was looking for a pattern I could adapt to a small quilt using rainbow fabrics from my stash when I received the September/ October 2017 issue. When I saw the Painted Canyon quilt, I knew I had what I was looking for. I was able to use leftover pieces to make half-square triangles for the outer border, and cut the rest of the leftovers into strips for the binding. CUTTING PEAKY AND SPIKE TRIANGLES 1. Begin by cutting 1 fabric strip from each color you wish to combine in a Peaky and Spike unit. To determine strip size, add 1/2" to the desired finished size of the unit. For example, for a 4" finished unit, cut strips 4 1/2" wide. 2. Working with the strip for the center Spike triangle, position the Tri tool atop the strip, aligning the mark corresponding to strip width along bottom edge of strip. Cut along both angled sides of Tri tool (Photo A). 3. Reposition Tri tool with strip width line along top edge of strip and side along previously cut edge. Cut another Spike triangle (Photo B). NOTE: Perfectly straight and accurately cut strips are essential for strip sets. If strips are cut across folded width of fabric, open strips to see that they are straight. If strips are not cut exactly perpendicular to fold, they will bow where they were folded, making a crooked strip. 1. To make a strip set, pair two strips with right sides facing and raw edges aligned. Machine stitch with ¼" seam. Show and tell at Michelle Yeo’s local appliqué group in 2012 unexpectedly catapulted her into visibility within the quilt world far beyond her native Australia. Quiltmania Editor Carol Veillon, accompanied by a photographer, was there. She’d come to meet Michelle after seeing her quilts in a shop in Sydney, Australia. “I showed my Prairie Rose quilt, and not long after that, a photo of it ran in the magazine,” Michelle said. “That led to my book: Of Needle, Thimble andThread.” The book, which was published by Quiltmania in 2013 and features Prairie Rose and 16 more of Michelle’s quilts, gave her international exposure. It’s time for a big celebration in the quilting world—high fives around the guild, please! For the first time in years, according to the Quilting in America 2017 Survey, the average age of a “dedicated quilter” has dropped one full year from 64 to 63 years old! What’s the big deal, you say? That small change is a huge victory for quilters who have worried about the future of quilting as a hobby, profession and art. For the past decade, that average age has crept up from 62 to 64 years old, implying that as baby boomers age, the quilting hobby is aging with them. TO PREPARE BINDING Strips for quilt binding may be cut either on the straight of grain or on the bias. 1. Measure the perimeter of your quilt and add approximately 20" to allow for mitered corners and finished ends. 2. Cut the number of strips necessary to achieve desired length. We like to cut binding strips 2¼" wide. 3. Join your strips with diagonal seams into 1 continuous piece (Photo A). Press the seams open. 4. Press your binding in half lengthwise, with wrong sides facing, to make double-fold binding (Photo B). ATTACHING BINDING Prepare quilt by trimming any excess batting and quilt back (Photo C). Taking a photography class at the local community college seemed like a logical way to improve my skills in taking pictures of my quilts. I am a professional longarmer, and I like to photograph my clients’ quilts before I return them. I quickly became hooked, particularly when I used my dad’s vintage Minolta 35mm camera during my second class in black-and-white photography. I began to realize that photography and quilting have a lot in common. The more I learned about the elements of photography, the more confident I became about my quilting designs.
