FRESH IDEAS WITH THREAD We reckon some of the most striking embroidery projects are born from the simplest of ideas. Like this placemat-come-wall-art design by Lucy Freeman. The brief? To embellish a jute table mat with thread. And wow, did Lucy deliver. As soon as we saw her initial floral sketches for this one we knew it was going to be a stunner, but nothing could have quite prepared us for seeing it in real life. It wasn’t a placemat anymore, it was a work of art, and one that we felt compelled to hang on a wall immediately for everyone to enjoy! GETTING STARTED Prepare your sewing machine by attaching a freemotion (AKA darning) foot. Next, drop the feed dogs – the mechanism that grips and pulls fabric through your sewing machine. Your machine manual should tell you how to do this. This project does not require you to mount it in a hoop – the soluble and tear away stabilisers will provide plenty of stability to prevent the stitching from warping. Start with test fabric to make sure the tension is correct and the bottom thread doesn’t show though. Remember, the stitch length is determined by the speed at which you move the fabric – the faster you go, the longer the stitches will be. Alejandra Oviedo is an embroidery artist with a super power – she can use a needle and thread to conjure up entire magical miniature worlds for us to explore! When Vika Prokofjeva took up embroidery as an antidote to anxiety, she discovered a winning formula: landscapes plus Satin Stitch equals a quieter mind. HOW TO TRANSFER TRACING Place light-coloured and fine fabrics over the design and trace over it. For thicker or dark-coloured fabrics, a light source such as a window or lightbox makes this process much simpler. TRANSFER PENS AND PENCILS Choose a colour that will show up on the fabric. Use a permanent marker if the stitching will cover the lines, or a removable marker if you need to erase the lines afterwards – test on a scrap of fabric first so you know it can be removed. IRON-ON TRANSFERS Press your fabric, then place your transfer sheet ink side down on top and press with a hot, dry iron (taking care with heat-sensitive fabrics).
