GETTING STARTED Prepare your sewing machine by attaching a freemotion embroidery (AKA darning) foot. Next, drop the feed dogs – the mechanism that grips and pulls fabric through your sewing machine. Your sewing machine manual should tell you how to do this, but there is usually a lever to pull at the back of the machine. Start with test fabric to make sure the tension is correct and the bottom thread doesn’t show though. When starting a fresh line of stitching, position the fabric in place and lower the needle to catch the bobbin thread. Pull the bottom bobbin thread through to the front of the fabric. GETTING STARTED This design is a great introduction to freemotion quilting. Working on a smaller scale project such as this is the perfect way to practise the technique without also having to wrangle a giant quilt around your machine at the same time. Almost any domestic sewing machine can be used for freemotion quilting — the key is to drop the feed dogs and, ideally, use a freemotion foot.
