Ceylon Stitch is a must-know technique for this time of year. This tactile stitch adds a three-dimensional quality to your work and it’s brilliant for emulating knitted and crochet details with thread – just as we have done here! The stitch is formed using a series of chained loops and is anchored to the fabric with a foundation line of stitches. And as it’s a detached stitch (only connected to the fabric around the edge of the area), it lends itself really well to being stuffed too. GETTING STARTED Prepare your sewing machine by attaching a freemotion embroidery (AKA darning) foot. Next, drop the feed dogs – the mechanism that grips and pulls fabric through your sewing machine. Your sewing machine manual should tell you how to do this, but there is usually a lever to pull at the back of the machine. Start with test fabric to make sure the tension is correct and the bottom thread doesn’t show though. When starting a fresh line of stitching, position the fabric in place and lower the needle to catch the bobbin thread. Pull the bottom bobbin thread through to the front of the fabric. More joy, more connection, more authenticity, that’s the way Fleur Woods likes to play it. She’s a mixed media artist based in Upper Moutere on New Zealand’s South Island. When she began stitching and following her heart after years of working with multiple disciplines, everything changed. Now embroidery is main character in her rich, layered floral pieces. “I stitch with the mind of a painter,” Fleur says, “colour blocking, layering and adding information with my needle and thread just as I did when I painted.” For Fleur, embroidery is another form of mark making in her toolkit of artists’ disciplines. MATERIALS Raglan sleeve sweatshirt: hot pink Stranded cotton: 4 skein of white Embroidery hoop: 13cm diameter Soluble adhesive stabiliser Tape measure Basic embroidery kit STITCHES USED Backstitch, French Knot, Running Stitch, Scallop Stitch, Straight Stitch 01 Prewash the sweatshirt to prevent loose pigment from the fabric staining the threads in future washes. Work a line of Running Stitch around the neckline of the jumper using six strands of white. Keep the stitching about 1cm from the edge (or seam). Measure 10cm from the first line of stitching and periodically mark all around the neckline from front to back. GETTING STARTED Freemotion machine embroidery can be worked on any sewing machine as long as you’re able to lower the feed dogs so you can move your fabric around freely. Your manual will tell you if this is possible and whether you need a darning or a freemotion foot. This project is worked without a hoop. Instead, it uses heavyweight fusible interfacing to give it support and keep it flat while moving through the machine. If you are new to freemotion embroidery, we recommend practising first on a piece of spare fabric. When you first begin stitching, you’ll feel like the machine is running away with you as the feed dogs aren’t keeping it in one place. FABRIC Embroidery can be worked on a wide variety of fabrics or ready-made items. It’s best to choose fabrics with a fairly smooth surface as heavily-textured surfaces will prevent the stitches from lying flat. For beginners, it’s best to start with 100% plain-weave cotton. When choosing fabric, consider its intended use, how much wear it will get, and how often it will need to be washed. Fabric can be categorised by its weave and fibre content. Plain weave is the most common type of weave and includes poplin, calico and canvas. Satin weave is a really smooth fabric, which is glossy on one side; it includes cotton sateen and satin.
