GETTING STARTED Prepare your sewing machine by attaching a freemotion (AKA darning) foot. Next, drop the feed dogs – the mechanism that grips and pulls fabric through your sewing machine. Your machine manual should tell you how to do this. This project does not require you to mount it in a hoop – the soluble and tear away stabilisers will provide plenty of stability to prevent the stitching from warping. Start with test fabric to make sure the tension is correct and the bottom thread doesn’t show though. Remember, the stitch length is determined by the speed at which you move the fabric – the faster you go, the longer the stitches will be. HOW TO TRANSFER TRACING Place light-coloured and fine fabrics over the design and trace over it. For thicker or dark-coloured fabrics, a light source such as a window or lightbox makes this process much simpler. TRANSFER PENS AND PENCILS Choose a colour that will show up on the fabric. Use a permanent marker if the stitching will cover the lines, or a removable marker if you need to erase the lines afterwards – test on a scrap of fabric first so you know it can be removed. IRON-ON TRANSFERS Press your fabric, then place your transfer sheet ink side down on top and press with a hot, dry iron (taking care with heat-sensitive fabrics). LOUISE NEWTON Triplet, Louise taught herself to stitch in 2017 after making a New Year’s resolution to find a creative hobby for when she finished university. Most of Louise’s work is created completely freehand – she picks colours and petal shapes as she goes, never knowing quite how the piece will come together! Louise enjoys experimenting with unique techniques such as stitching outside of the hoop or frame to create thread stems that seem to grow out of the fabric itself. For this design, you’ll need to use a variant of Holbein Stitch worked between two lines. 01 Use an erasable embroidery pen to mark two parallel lines centred on the drawstring of the pyjama bottoms. How did your embroidery journey begin? I’ve cross-stitched and embroidered on and off since I was a young teenager, but it wasn’t until my late twenties, after I had my son, that embroidery become a permanent hobby and passion.
