YOUR BASIC EMBROIDERY KIT For the majority of the projects in this issue you will need the following items. There are different types available, so read on to choose the correct materials for each project. Fabric Thread Needles Scissors Embroidery hoop Transfer pens/pencils FABRIC Embroidery can be worked on a wide variety of fabrics or ready-made items. MATERIALS Your choice of straw sun hat (with wide brim) Raffia: 50g of green, red, dark red and yellow Masking tape Basic embroidery kit STITCHES USED French Knot, Leaf Stitch, Satin Stitch, Straight Stitch 01 Transfer the design onto paper and then cut out this template. Secure it in place on the brim of your hat using masking tape. Outline the template using a heat-erasable pen. Like a flower following the sunshine, Maggie Schnücker has followed her curiosity. It has branched this way and that over the years, but has resulted in a flourishing business. The Houston-based designer’s path to stitching success didn’t begin with embroidery, though, but another artform entirely. “I got my degree in graphic design,” Maggie shares, “then I graduated and was burnt out from it.” That’s when embroidery came into the picture – it was a welcome outlet without any pressures attached. “I was looking for something new to try that summer, in 2017,” she recalls, “and saw a hand-stitched embroidery hoop. HOW TO TRANSFER TRACING Place light-coloured and fine fabrics over the design and trace over it. For thicker or dark-coloured fabrics a light source such as a window or lightbox makes this process much simpler. TRANSFER PENS AND PENCILS Choose a colour that will show up on the fabric. Use a permanent marker if the stitching will cover the lines, or a removable marker if you need to erase the lines afterwards – test first on a scrap of fabric so you know it can be removed. IRON-ON TRANSFERS Press your fabric, then place your transfer sheet ink side down on top and press with a hot, dry iron (taking care with heat-sensitive fabrics). For her Graduate Fashion Week in 2018, designer Tihara Smith created Caribbean-inspired garments and accessories with a London twist; The Windrush Collection. Here, she shares the story behind one of her stand-out pieces and reflects on her use of colour, texture and material. Tell us about this piece, You Called We Came. The inspiration behind my collection (and this piece) was my Caribbean heritage, and the Windrush Generation. Backstitch Backstitch forms a neat line which can be used alone or to outline other stitches. Backstitch should be worked so that all the stitches are the same length with no gaps between them. Bring the needle up at 1, down at 2, up at 3 and so on. Continue stitching in this way, always working back on yourself. Brick Stitch Work a row of even-length Backstitches along the area to be filled. Stitch your next row of Backstitches below the first row, making them the same length as those above, but offsetting them. The stitches at the beginning and end of this row will be shorter than the others. Continue in this way, so you have a ‘brick-filled’ area.
