Over the course of their marriage, Kerry and Larry Fox built multiple homes: first, a four-bedroom Cape Cod, and later, a two-story Colonial, both in their home state of Rhode Island. Though it can be a fine line between controlled chaos and jumbled mess at times, you’ll find a lot of different types of plants in a cottage garden. There’s something irresistible about living near the water—but living on top of it? Well, that takes things to a whole new level. Just ask the owner of this micro-cabin in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, whose home gives new meaning to the phrase “a river runs through it.” Perched on pillars directly above a rushing creek, the cozy cabin exudes a sense of instant serenity. “It’s definitely something almost never seen,” says Brian Wiese, co-owner of Legacy Post & Beam in Fremont, Nebraska, the company that produced the cottage. “The cabin is elevated above an active stream, installed on vertical reinforced concrete pillars so that it can rest over the creek running through the property.” The plan was to blend the cabin into the surrounding landscape, creating an inviting treehouse effect.…

Ornaments and more Historically, this type of garden was small, so every square inch was used for maximum benefit. That didn’t mean there weren’t a few ornaments worked in for the enjoyment of the owner, but they needed to do double-duty. You might see a good-looking obelisk or trellis that provided room to grow vining plants or an attractive bee hive to encourage pollinators to stick around and ensure a bumper crop.
